Can tell how much aggro a 55 monk can do by just party up?
Juguard
Ok, this SS necro was looking for a pro 55monk for UW. I consider myself pretty good one in UW.
He claimed he can tell how much I can aggro and said I suck, by just joining party with me. I was about to enter UW, asked him if he was ready, then he left party, and right away, was asking for a different pro 55monk, lol. Look at pick below.
that possible, some type of bug? Or some looser player?

He probably didn't think you brought together enough mobs for SS to have as much of an effect as possible. Still, it's a stupid thing to do.

we havent even gone to UW, thats the thing. He was looking for 55, I agreed, he joined, was about to go to UW, and he just left, and asked for a different 55.

There had to have been more to the conversation. Did you ask him anything? did he ask you anything? What's your secondary class? What kind of armor do you wear?

speaking of lame people in toa...
a guildie and I agreed to get this guy a spider for 25k (12.5k each), and he shows us the money, says ok. so we go, and we get to the last 3 spirits and tell him to pay here. SO...we have a verbal battle for about 20 minutes, him telling us we are scammers and us trying to finish this thing, and so he goes and pulls the spirits to reaper. so i PM my guildie and told him to help me kill the spider.
so last spirit dies, 55 lays all enchants exept PS and HB on the spider and I cast ss-suffering-echo-desecrate-desecrate, spider dies.
guy goes " ahahahah now I know how to do it. I was afk 3/4 the time anyway..ahahah RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOers!"
why are people such jerks these days?

These days? Dude, people have been jerks since day one.
That being said, I have new policy regarding idiots. Appologize to good players, then leave. I can always find another group.
Actually, I put my estimates at 35% Lamers and Jerks, 40% Competent Good Players and 25% Left My Game On While I Went To Work/School for the Guild Wars community.

You can't tell how much aggro a 55 monk can do by just party up. However, you can tell how much of a jerk someone is by their actions.

You avoided some of the key questions.
A: what's your secondary class? If you're not mo/w, then he was quite correct in thinking you can't aggro very big, because only a mo/w can do so efficiently.
B: what kind of armor do you wear? If you're not wearing full tatoos, then you're probably new at farming UW, and thus, probably don't aggro big groups.
Not to play devils advocate, but I've spent a good deal of time in ToA searching for PuG monks and necros. I can generally tell by simple observation or a couple questions how good someone will be, and will do my best to save myself the hassle of going down with someone who will likely waste my time.

Over 1 million+ people have brought and play the game. Not all of these people are going to act the way you would expect someone to act. You are always going to meet someone that says something that would be totally normal to them but means absoluetly nuthing to you. You will always meet people you wont like in life
Its one of those things. People are weird :P

I'll agree with Sno. Generally, when I see a monk going in with Wanderer's Judge's, or not full tatoo's, I can tell he's not very good, even if I haven't seen him play. I can also tell by the skillset, if a monk uses Watchful Spirit, pings his energy or ask for BR, I know he isn't going to be too good. Hell, those who advertise themselves as "Exp" are generally the worse.
Profession means a lot too. Mo/Me is just stupid, because you cannot possibly handle huge aggros. I have yet to see a Mo/Me take on as little as 9 smites.
If we are in UW tho, I'm not going to be an asshole and quit though. I'll play through the run and do my best, but won't go on a second run with him.
Some people are really just stupid though. I've had a nec refuse to play with me because I wasn't wearing tatoos (had FoW ascestic on :P)

AH... streamline thinking... isnt it wonderous?
Many secondaries can work as 55 monk tank. And to say that the Mo/W is the ONLY setup that can take on larger aggros is just ignorance. As a Mo/Me who uses all tattoos EXCEPT pants, i can take on 8+ smites up to 10 sometimes. I go very often with a guildy, and have 3 ppl on my friends list that i had randomly met, who had been so impressed, that they asked to remain a contact for UW farming.
And im sorry, but to say "No offense, but i can tell if they are good by what they wear..." is just plain BS. What happened to "do not judge a book by its cover" ?? This debate just comes back to the classic Guild Wars debate over what is better:: Skill or Equipment? If you saw me, and thought "oh, he sucks, he doesnt have full tattoos..." i would scoff at you for such a thing. 90% of the friends i have that farm also dont have full tattoos or are only Mo/W... In fact, one friend of mine has farmed and ONLY farmed for all his GW life since release with a 55 monk. He is not a Mo/W, and he does not have full tattoos. And he is incredibly good at farming both as the 55 Monk tank or SS necro.
To the OP::
Ignore these people who say you can tell whether or not a person is "good" by what they look like. It is a sad thing if a person does that. It is purely based on your skill, knowledge and experience in the game that determines how "good" you are at a particular thing, like 55 monk tanking.

To me, a good monk can take 14+ smites (using a PS build), and dies very rarely. This cannot be done with a Mo/Me. Seriously, I see no advantage in going /Me rather than /W. Bonettis can fill up your mana in 2sec and allows you to tank so much more than you could with /Me.

It's not streamline thinking, I've thought of and experiemented with many different builds in UW, and found from experience that mo/w works the best. As cerb said, we clearly have different definitions of the word "good" when it comes to UW tanking. I know that it takes a great deal of experience in UW to ever get good at it, and if someone is going to be spending that much time down there, he will probably invest in the best equipment somewhere down the line. More armor vs anything means absolutely nothing to a 55hp monk, so the only viable option for armor would be ascetic. As to your "skill or equipment" statement, I can't possibly know a persons skill without seeing him play, but I will make my best judgement based on his equipment. As I said, there is no reason (aside from look) to use anything but ascetic armor when using a 55hp build. There are many reasons I said that mo/w is superior to any other class, most of which involve bonettis (a skill underrated by many people.) Bonettis is absolutely priceless in UW, and is essential for efficient AND reliable runs. Bonettis has saved my life in many instances (in which I lagged, or in some other way messed up) not to mention the ability to tank 16 smites at once.

You don't have to play with a person to know their skill-level, asking a few simple questions will get you the answers instead of waiting 5-10 minutes to figure it out, and by then it's already too late, and you've wasted your gold.
So, you won't group with people because they wear anything other than ascetics, 'cause it's a sign of 'no0bishness'? I guess I'm just good or something, cus I use some sort of ascalon armor(don't recall name), without the energy bonus, and I take on 14-18 smites. I'll try to get a screen-shot, but it's very hard to stay alive, let alone try to get a screen-shot with all the lag caused by that many smites.
Also, to other people saying Mo/Me or whatever is just as good a tank as Mo/W, you're terribly mistaken, I'd like to see you tank more than 8~ smites on a Mo/Me, let alone 14-18. (Not saying it can't be done, just saying I've never seen it done, have seen many claims, and no proof).

I've never seen more than 16 done with a prot spirit build (with 55hp, no DP or AotL,) so if you say you can take 18, have your necro take a screenshot, as the lag from taking your own screenshot will no doubt kill you. I've experimented with guardian instead of blessed aura, which when combined with bonettis/breeze/ps in a specific pattern could allow you to tank over 20 without dp, but I didn't think the cost was worth the benefit.

imo beside armor, and 2nd class you cant tell. you can still have a player with all the req that you look and he will be the newbie guys in the hood.
i do mostly 2-3 smite run with my ranger. and ive seen my share of those in Uw. in the end of day, if you dont have a "date" for Uw or FOw then there is alot of luck involve. Mr Ownager

Many players swear by certain cookie cutter builds and won't have an open mind about trying something out of the box. There will always be naysayers and close-minded people. I switch my gear/weapons out when I'm farming places like UW because sometimes to survive, you have to. That's why I don't deal with PuGs when farming. When I was joining PuGs though, I'd turn the local and group chat off because 90% of the time it's a 10 year idiot that only uses three to four letter words in conversation. So if you do the PuG thing, spend some gold on different sets of armor so you can be judged accordingly. Then when they've paid and you're in UW, switch out to what works for you. I'm a strong avocate against naysayers, especially in a game like GuildWars where your gear simply just doesn't matter. (unless it's not infused and you're fighting mursat.) I also find that the majority of naysayers are not very good in math and do not perform their own research, which is why you get players just using one build over and over again. They won't try new skills unless they've seen a post or video on a build. (and I play both WoW and GW... many close minded folks that span across communities that never picked up good math skills in real life) There are many places that offer math tutoring, regardless of your age. Never too late to pick up some intellect and use it your builds. Amsterdam
Bottom line man you probably had a guy that went with you before, or was just someone who had bad expiriances with something about you that turned him off. Its not a big suprise to me. As far as sno's argument, I see necro's and 55's that don't have energy armor, and it turns me off, sometimes you can tell, maybe not in this case. My suggestion would be, just go have fun, its his loss, and its a game, made for having fun

You are contradicting yourself here. 8-10 smites isn't a "large aggro", I'd rather call it a decent aggro. Streamline thinking, maybe. However, I'd love you to tell me of a skill that is as good as Bonettis: Blocks 75% of hits you take (allows to take on large aatxe+darkness aggros, and large smite aggros, or even the Ice King quest) and gives 5 energy for each block (counters Fear me like a charm). It's also a lifesaver when you keep getting interrupted and need to secure a cast. To deal with interrupts with Mo/Me, you'd need Mantra of Resolve or Distortion, especially after the nerf. The thing is: both stances drain your mana. For the (nearly) same attack-evasion effect, using Bonetti's, you'd fill up your energy in just a few seconds, rather than having it drained in the same amount of time. On top of that, it requires adrenaline rather than energy, which you will have a load of, considering you are using Balthazar's Spirit.
You might try to think "Outside the Box", I love innovation myself, but I think Bonneti's does such a great job, I couldn't think of anything to replace it with. Da Deathblade
Didn't know bonettis was that vital, I have been going down to UW for a while now and brought bonettis but never knew that its the difference between 8 and 14 smites...
