I am tired of getting purple items with NO special abilities. Examples: Butterfly Sword, Hammer, Grim Cestas. I must be the unluckiest gamer in GW.

Happens to everyone from time to time. It can also happen with gold items. Now THAT does really suck.

Speaking of grim cestas... man I swear almost half of the items I get on drops are grim cestas or deadly cestas.

But yes, I do get a LOT of purple items with nothing special about them, and have gotten a few gold items that salvage into like 13 tanned hides woohoo - no rune in it, ID'ing it does nothing but give a price.

In one mission I got 5 purple items with jack stats. Is it a glitch or a feature to make you have that not-so-fresh feeling?

*ROFL* I had that happen to me twice last night. Once with a purple item and once with a blue item. I got no mods or anything. At first I thought it was a bug until I realized that it just happens. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

I think purples usually have higher damage and lower reqs then the same item in white that would normally drop in that area. So its not a total loss.

YOU LIEEEE!!!!!

Actually, I believe this is the case. My purple axe does 6-18 yet only requires 4 Axe Mastery. Now if I can only find a purple sword without reqs for my IW Warrior...

Lol I get them all the time, I have found 5 purples, and 1 gold, with no runes or anything remotely useful for me.

Yeah, I can see that... except most of the time the item in question is a salvage item, like for instance some dwarven armor.

I thought colours simply meant rarity, not stats or anything-however, most purples i have had had mods on them. Most of the time, when its a purple salvage item, its either a rune or nothing-note, when you id it, and it has no mod, its normally worth alot (100g+)

Yes, I believe for blue/purple/gold salvage items, at the very least the price will always increase. However, that's nowhere near close to the money you could have gotten if you had found a Rune and sold it.

Well if you consider that you are not actually missing out on an unlock and instead are getting a better yield from salvaging and item, it does not feel as a total loss. Granted, I would love more often to unlock, it really depends how the system works based on chance for rarity and what they have, as well as any adjustments when a chance is met. That is, if you have a constant chance to get a purple item, and then it assigns a random value to that when you finally get it, and possibly lowering your chance to get another purple item over the course of so many drops, this could really be a negative in the game rather than a positive if there is purely random and static chance to all of them, and if being colored truly does anything (I have gotten perfectly clean and common 15-22 swords with 6req, I doubt it is stats) for a higher yield, better equipment itself, or simply enables the ability to get upgrades. Granted, I've unlocked two on a blue item...

Wait, so seemingly "absent" stats on a blue/purple/gold salvage items means when you salvage it, you get even more crafting material than you normally would?

Wandering my own road.

It's still really annoying, and heart-wrenching to see purple, and have the thought trigger in your mind, "Hey, this might be a good item!", only to find out it's nothing.

Especially those unidentified items which identify to nothing. I mean, it's bad enough you can have no unidentified status at all, but to get someone's hopes up by seeing the word "unidentified", and drooling over the prospective rune, only to have nothing to show for it is just plain horrible.

I've felt the increase in their drops though, and got my first gold item a lot sooner than on my first character, which contained my first major rune, so I suppose it balances out. Not like I'd miss more runes of minor vigor, inspiration, warrior, or necro runes, like I almost always get anyway.

I'm thinking that purple rare items are just given a higher value for the merchant. The purple and gold dropped armors usually have a higher armor level than what I normally see, and gives more materials/gold from the merchant. i've also realized that the salvaged materials are more numerous and more likely to be rare if it's got a higher value.

I had that happen to me today too... Hmm...

But really, I get one or two gold drops every six or hours played (take total number of hours and divide by number of gold items )

Usually, I get the goods . But today, I had that EXACT same thing happen to me. OMFG HAX

At least it was a Steel Ingot and not an iron one...

Arenanet isn't THAT mean

In my experience, I am more excited over blue lettered salvage items, as this always means "rune" while purple or gold salvage items means nothing 70% of the time.

Also note that gold and purple items typically have lower requirements than corresponding white or blue items. This can be somewhat useful in a limited manner. It is quite annoying to get purple or gold salvageables with no runes, however. Just earlier today I got both a purple and a gold salvage item with no runes in the same run... but then later in the run I found a gold salvage item with a superior vigor rune, which was nice.

Hmm, the no rune thing does seem to happen more often with purple and gold salvage items than with blue ones, though. Perhaps it's an ad hoc modifier to limit rune drops from certain commonly farmed areas with relatively good drop rates.
