Armor is the amount of protection you have against physical attacks (unless otherwise stated). So if you currently use pieces of armor that supply 12 Armor, and you upgrade to pieces that supply 40 armor, the amount of physical damage that you take will be greatly reduced. I think of it like this... a 12 Armor piece is only 12mm thick (not that much protection), where as a 40 Armor piece is 40mm thick... quite the improvement when taking the force out of blows, and arrows. Elements on the other hand could pose a threat because the armor isnt built to ward against things like cold, electricity, fire. I hope that helps you out.

the number by the armor is the protection level, the higher the number the better protection offered to that area of the body...keep in mind some armor types have penalties and /or bonuses

ok, but, i usually dont recieve 40 dmg from any mob... so as far as it seems, an 40 armor vest will eliminate dmg completely. this is of course not logical. so?

Your getting confused between damage reduction, and armor helping reduce damage. The higher the armor number, it helps reduce the damage. Armor does not take away a certain amount of damage, but reduces the damage done.
