Ok, i have a laptop i got in november -hp pavilion 6100 if that helps, but it only has 512 ram and i want a gig but have no ida about different types of ram, or differences between laptop/pc ram. is there a way to tell what type of motherboard i have, and if i can fit more in there?

Go to www.corsair.com and fill out their "configurator". You'll find you need PC 2700 SODIMMs for your laptop (I think - I chose zv6130us - not sure if that's your exact model).
They then give you links to several on-line retailers where you can purchase corsair memory -- or, if you want, you can use the info they provide to buy a different brand.
Remember, you probably have 2 sticks of RAM in your system now, so more than likely you'll have to buy 2x512MB sticks to make that 1GB and sell off the old sticks.

Edit: they dont have the zv6100 model....which one is the next closest?
the zv6000 128 mb video card one sems close and uses same pc 2700, maybe same in all these 6000 series laptops?

Knowing HP, they're the same. Since you have a zv6100, I'd only look at zv61xx models. I bet if you look at all of the zv61xx models you'll see they use the same RAM, anyways.
Just make sure the first 2 letters and first 2 numbers match up to your system and you'll be OK. (Don't look at RAM for a dv61xx if you have a zv61xx)
