Like most, when I first found the thread I was amazed and grateful that such a guide existed. It provided useful information that would give both buyers and sellers a fair price. This however is no longer the case.
The guide has now become so well known and so widely used that it no longer reflects the market prices, it now sets the market's prices. Evidence of this is the last update was done on 01-19-06, almost 2 months ago. Also take a look at Ebay which hosts millions of GP sales per week.
This is detrimental to both current buyers and sellers. Buyers are reluctant to purchase, and when they do they are paying excessive prices due to downward price inflexibility. The number of sellers who want to sell at that price far out weigh the number of buyers, and most can't find buyers to hook up with.
Greygon, I appreciate your idea, your initiative, and your industrial nature to keep your post current, but this guide must be closed. Further price updates will mitigate this problem, but also prolong it. Please, let the market decide its price.
Community, please comment and give your opinion.

So I guess I should delete my post too?
So your telling me that his post can say each item is worth 500gp each and the community is going to automatically buy/sell at those prices? I know that's a extreme example but I just don't see how one post on one community forum can dictate one million GW players "value" to items.

i totaaly agree thats its now dictating the pricing for most ppl, and brought this issue up quite a while ago now, and the only answer ppl could give was that its SHOULD NOT be used as a pricelist, well offcourse it SHOULDNT thats my point, but unfortunatly it IS , you go try and sell a green now, and i bet you cant gethigher than the price in that thread, even tho the amount of greens in the market to my eyes as actually gone down recently, the price has stayed exactly the same as the guide post since the last time it was updates, or even slightly less, razorstone hardly ever drops now, i know this thru experience, less than half the amount it used to drop, yet its 30-40k max now , and imo, should still be easily 50k + .
i dunno why this post is in here tho, why not post it i n the greens thred ? x_X this is NOT a pc.

I agree
I can easily get greens wayyyyyyyyyyyy below listed prices... it's called haggling... and if you pay attention to current market you shouldn't have to worry about it... plus there's over farming and still way more of the items than there are people wanting them (I see tons every day selling the razorstone)

If you think that something is overpriced then don't buy it.
It's plain and simple.

I think there is some truth to the OP. The price guide is just what it is, a guide. However, many people in-game or on the forums refer to this price guide when negotiating a price for an item. It speaks for the guide's popularity, but at the same time, it does have the effect of making the prices more rigid.
For instance, if you are trying to buy a certain item in-game, which you know to be worth 10k, but the seller quotes the price guide and says it's 20k. It would be quite useless to haggle with the seller, as the seller would time after time point to the price guide.
So, in my opinion, it is indeed a double-edged sword. While it is useful, it can have certain side effects. That's why I think it's very important to keep the price guide as current as possible; otherwise, it would be doing more disservice than service to the community.
