Characters too Attractive?

I just thought I'd throw this out there because I think about it when I make my characters and I wonder if I am the only one.

I know there is a lot of variation available to us when we are selecting character features. However I think that everybody looks too good. I think I saw a show on beauty once and humans perceive how beautiful someone is by how symmetrical their features are between the too sides of thier face.

In the interest of having more variation, I think there should be an asymetry scale you can select when constructing your character. Why should we all have to look good.

Also whats with these female warriors that look like they couldn't pick up a hammer to drive a nail into a 2x4 let alone smash a grawl to the ground?

Why aren't their any Valkyrie types with long blonde braids, copious bosoms and enough heft to leave a real impression on you?

Hm. The ability to create an 'uglier' character would be nice, but I think that would just come with better customization. An asymetry (sp?) scale is a creative solution, but just slightly too specific. ^_^
And if you want an unattractive character in the meantime, go with... well, most any necro combination'd work. ^_^
And in response to the female warriors comment, that may just come if ANet decides to alter customization. I'll leave whether they're even considering that or not to the more attentive, but hey, it's there. ~shrug~

Haha, I saw that "beauty show" too. More vitality etc.

Personally, I don't care for the symetrical stuffs.

About long hairs however... It had always been a taboo-scream-factor for 3D animator to animate a good long hair animation. Anet would need to develope a technology just for it (not lagging the player or the server). Other wise, the long hair look so ugly, don't even bother with it (hair poke through your shoulder back, and head; tilt a direction to defy law of physic; etc).

I really wanted to make a sort of Gollum/Smeagol character; really vulgar looking guy maybe with a humpback. I hear they are having non-human henchmen in Factions, so maybe it's possible they can have a creature as a profession in an upcoming GW. We gotta make the game balanced, like ANET always preaches.

Edit: Actually I take back what I said, the faces are not pretty enough.

Gimme some Lineage 2/Rising Force Online faces =P

I don't need really skimpy armors, I would rather have a character with a really cute face clad in full armor/robes^^

Just my opinion,

But I play female characters specifically because I like to look at females. In particular, I like to look at attractive females. Call me strange.

The option to play a fat little troll has little appeal to me...although having a bunch of ugly people around would make my character look that much better...

The option to play a fat troll was a lot of fun when I played EverQuest. Mind you, in that game you might actually roleplay. This game just isn't really for roleplay.

But yeah, some fat people would be nice.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the "cover girls" of anything ANet pushes out there are... well... girls. I mean, the box art is mostly females, the factions art is all females, the screenies they push out focus on the females, their web sites are decorated with females, so on, so forth. I like looking at attractive females, but this is just blatent.

In my opinion, majority of L2 faces are pretty lousy (their male is pretty good thou... well, dwarf, orcs and few human only), and RF's mostly are way too plain (except the androids, they were pretty interesting, but still, a bit on the plain side).

If anything, I wish Anet would design a character creation that can rival Phantasy Star Universe.

Man that would be cool. I was one of the select people that played PSO when it came out on the DC; boy was that fun. I really enjoyed it for its futuristic environment, and good-feeling tunes. If GW made that sort of themed expansion, I'd never leave the computer.

Last I heard about PSO was a p2p game called 'Blue Burst'> 'p2p' turned me off to it no matter how good it is.

What's funny is I play only female characters. Why? cause if I gotta look at the backside of something for hundreds of hours, I'm not staring at the backside of some dude. More power to those that feel the opposite.
If anything, we need some better monk hair (some come with factions I hope). And someone has already mentioned the female faces. But that leaves the Assassins as having the worst hair when it comes out.
Body types would be nice to choose from though.
So, if we are looking for un-attractive characters to play, I think the Assassin will fit the bill, unless they have fixed that prior to release - I hope at least.

When I first picked up this game I really wanted to play a hulking 200 pound butch lesbian hammer warrior.

I agree, all the women in this game look like ditzes. Especially the eles.

Hmm, what? Anet using sex to sell a product? That's unheard of!

To be fair, when I went to pick up Factions at Best Buy, the original Guild Wars cover art was of the Male Warrior... but that's probably only because all the alternate covers with females got bought up already!

Sex sells. Anyone in marketing will tell you that. Sex sells everything from deoderant to alcohol. In fact anything specifically marketed towards men in that 18-30 demographic will likely involve sex at some point in their advertising campaign. Sorry to all you lady gamers out there but let's face it gaming is generally a guy thing. I don't think the option for uglier chars will fly. At least I hope not. If I wanted to look at ugly people I'd work 24/7.

It's funny how we make judgements on products based on how attractive the girl is on the outside of the box. Sometimes, the best games come in the plainest of packages, not to send out an alterted perception of the product, or the product's users.

Sex sells! Anet has a primary target demographic that probably ranges from age 13 - 18 year old boys. Hell, I'm 36 and would much rather look at a hot girl than an ugly troll. I know there are a lot of older people like me that play, and also a lot of girls and women, but we are not the norm. Maybe if they put a Ballys Total Fitness in Lyons Arch my female ranger could pump some iron.

I understand that sex sells. In fact, some studies suggest it's always better to go with a female model. Females like looking at other females too, though for different reasons. Females like the "strong, independant woman protagonist" and guys just like looking at women.

But I think they're overdoing it a bit. To be honest it turns me off when I see females so overly splashed on everything they can splash them on. I would like to see a guy on the cover now and then as an example of what kind of awesome character I can create in the game. I, too, want to see the strong independant male protagonist. I want to see a guy so damn manly he gets a hole blown clean through his chest and he just gets up and patches it up with duct tape and continues slaughtering like a maniac while chewing tobacco and wiping the blood out of his eyes.

Or the guy who's so suave he just tricks his enemies into killing themselves because he's so damn clever and cool while seducing all the female enemies into abandoning their naughty ways to embrace even naughtier ways with him.

No offense to women, but it just looks silly after a certain point to see a dainty woman holding a hammer. And it gets even sillier when there are so many women on the cover of everything it almost looks like the world of Tyria is an amazon society and the men are just kind of "there."

I am a man, and I identify with male protagonists.

The characters are too attractive, some of them look like they belong on a catwalk, not survivors of an apocalypse who have spent their lives fighting. More scared/grizzled looking textures would be better. Fatter characters, facial and body hair would all help and avoid the attack of the clones, that you see everywhere.

As I said, the Guild Wars I saw had the Male Warrior on the cover...

I'm not sure if they're planning to do alternate covers with Factions, but maybe a Male Ritualist?

Well a survivor of an apocalypse isn't likely to be very well fed so no fatties in GW. Realism is all fine and good but I'm sure I said it before and I'll say it again. I do not like having to look at ugly people. Call me shallow but dammit it's just not on my list of things to do. It's not like I have it written down underneathe laundry. So no. No ugly characters. There are enough ugly people in the world as it is.If you want justification for beautiful people in the game then here you go. Physical attractiveness is not only based on the symmetry of the face but also on the physical conditioning of the body. So all these lean muscular type people are fully in line with what would happen in an apocalyptic situation if you ask me. People in better physical condition are better suited to survive. Those who are physically attractive are simply more likely to take better care of themselves to maintain their attractiveness. You don't see a lot of people with faces that could make a mortician shudder who are built like a Calvin Klein model do you? Why is that? I'll tell you why. There is no point for them to bother. They are already ugly and all the washboard abs in the world won't change that. So frankly speaking beautiful people would fall into the category of those most likely to survive the apocalypse. Now whether they can survive for long periods of time afterwards is anyone's guess but considering that this game is set in a Medieval type of setting it is reasonable to assume that everyone that exists in that world is used to a certain amount of physical hardship and therefore would be better suited to endure the harsh environmental realities of a post apocalyptic kingdom. So there you go, rationale for why there are no fatties, or ugly characters.
