I'm not one to question Anet. They've made an awesome game and are soon going to roll out some even sweeter material in Factions.

That said did anyone notice that the servers went down the same exact day Anet does a preview of Factions for the media? A simmilar problem happened with the economy before, but we didn't have a total lock down for hours. They even had a convienet build save just that morning with the HoH fix. Is it possible that they turned off the servers to launch up a preview of Factions? Anet said in an earlier article that before factions goes up "old servers will go offline."

Or is the event connected in a different way? ie. Rouge hackers wanting to get a glimpse of the new game.

(This post was made after having a seven hour guild wars relapse.)

I have a feeling the problem became complicated because for whatever reason the error happened (hackers, glitch, some guy spilling his coffee on the servers, etc..) and it was compounded by the fact that as Anet said not many people reported it (hell it's free stuff, and plus many thought another intentional reset was in place), and because Anet was scrambling to figure out the best course of action in order to minimize damage done to the economy.

I mean when Game Designers make a game I don't think they factor in being able to shut down their entire game within minutes and then reload it to a previous time.

The added complications of Factions events/downloads/streaming probably didn't help the situation much either.

I doubt they would use the same servers to preview the game to the press as they use everyone to play on.

The smart thing to do as far as that goes is to have the new servers up with the old ones and release a patch that connects to the new ones and then shut the old ones down after everyone is patched up so noone loses any play time.

That, and people refusing to log off once they saw the hammer falling.

Well, as was explained, that problem wasn't quite exploited to the extent that this one was. That, and this actually happened last night too, apparently, so something had to be done. With that said, there is no conspiracy, so I'm going to go ahead and close this thread.
