Rubies and Sapphire.

I notice the price of these keeps climbing. Do people know something about factions that I don't?
zerulus
people are just speculating, they better hope they're right=)

guess noone knows the correct price for rub/sapph.
depends if jewels will have some hp/energy/skills bonus or just something that shines...
the current price is for the "shining only" theory, because considering the drop rate if jewels will have some bonus stat rub/sapph prices will skyrocket.

It's hard to avoid the suspicion that it's people in the beta (or who know people in the beta) who are buying, though.

we'll just have to see. i'm not buying em.
heavy metal rules
they will have a use in factions gaile said in her chat a few months back, as to how they will be implimented, she couldn't say for sure, just that they will be used, (eg. bracelets, earings, necklaces) or something else.
Poison Ivy
^Woah...now there's a perfectly good reason to be buying em.

Although she may have been saying that to trick people into buying them so they act as a money sink. Yeah they may be used but they could be used for the equivalant of drogs or something making them decrease to 300g or something. No one knows what they are for yet so unless you have a lot of money to invest dont buy them.

I've only bought about 3 of ea. I think I'll just sit on what I've got. I'm a conservative investor. Though I met someone the other day that has over 1000 of ea. She'll be very rich if they turn out to be the ectos of Cantha.
Numa Pompilius
With 2000 gems at 8000 a pop I think she's very rich already.

I bought some rubies and saphires, but only because I anticipate right after Factions comes out for them to skyrocket in price. So I bought a few in the off chance that if they are for something worthwhile I won't have to spend loads because the price of them went up.
I assume it's entirely possible however that they are ued for somthing less desirable, and that Anet simply built up the hype around them in order to cause people to buy them and get money out of the economy. I suppose that's the worst case scenario, and in that case I blew 50k.

Plus, I'm also betting Rubies and Sapphires aren't the only things we'll be able to use. Jade, Amythest, Quartz, etc.etc.

If there's a use for materials, Guild Wars always has a way to provide you with them, wether you craft them (materials crafter), or whether there are grounds to farm them (UW/ecto, FoW/shards).
I'm rather doubtfull about gems getting real importance if there's no way for people to get them reasonnably. I think most people who got stacks of them are gonna be seriously disappointed.

Everyone's forgetting the simple and likely case that if jewels are used/needed in Factions they'll drop at an increased rate that makes them feasible. Why pay crazy money now for something that won't be as rare later?
Head_Damage
ypu actually never know what there jewels are used for and there will be many ideas floating around what pepole well as may pass on for example
rubbies could just be shards and you may need a several amount to make a whole rubbie or something similar with a dif name or you may be able to connect the shard to make a whole obsidian weapon for your ass or rit
the jewels could also be so easily dropped by many of the enimies over there and turn into the stuff like blots of cloth or bones from the undead of cathana. anything could be possible i suppose its just time to wait

5-5.5k (which is the average i payed for my gems) it's not crazy money to me, it's pretty cheap even if jewels wont have any stat bonus.
btw, someone like to invest money on perfect weapons, i prefer to have gems, where's the problem?

i dont think buying them cus they are valueable in rl
is a good idea at all, however its not a greater
idea to buy them cus they might be used in chapter 2
and from there (if they are) they might be used in
the armor of your choise....
not a good reason to me

i've still very skeptical of buying rubies or sapphires. i only have about 3 rubies and 6 sapphires, collection from drops over the past year of playing gw :P
we'll just have to wait n see what they do.

I'd be laughing so hard if they're common drops in factions^^

not all "rare crafting materials" are that good :P
i wouldn't be surprised if they turn out to be just like a bolt of linen or fur square
now, the other rare crafts that been neglected.. like monsterous eye or the sprintwood plank thingy. now i can see those being something along to lines of being used for new 15k or mayb even uw armor? :O dunno if theres any signs of uw armor :P
Vanquisher
I've stocked up on around 2000 Rubies/Sapphires - 4 stacks of each. I can definately see them getting used for something incredibly cool in the near future

Nothing is guaranteed regarding the factions economy.

Not like it's my only investment, shrug.

And let us not forget that even if these sales are based on leaks from beta testers that beta and final versions are often worlds apart. They might decide to chop the gem functionality out of it before it even hits shelves. Who knows?

Alright, people are speculating that the prices will atleast double if not more which will be awesome if it does. Now what people are starting to fret is if these DON'T skyrocket. Well here's the thing, if they don't it's ok. No matter what the outcome is if you bought those gems when they were 3,4 or even 6k each you will most likely not BLOW any gold. I highly doubt the prices will fall below that very quickly. SOOO if there is no use for them then you just sell it back and be sitting on a nice chunk of change.
allience
rubies and saphs already drop in uw/fow and from fire imps. so that means it's not a material that can be crafted, u have to find it.
as for their use, most likely it will be something expensive to show off with that has no other benefit, just like fow armor.
i'll probly buy 250 of each if i'll be there for the price rest, if not, i won't be wasting my time farming them.

Its only a matter of time until we find out... =/
Diablo???
I'd like to invest in them as well, but who knows... they might not even be used at all.... but still..... :/

I do not think it is a coincidence that ghe prices of Rubies, Saphires, AND ectos have risen since yeasterday's debacle.
People have known about the use in the facction update for weeks now, and the price of Ecto DROPPED, and the prices of rubies and saphires was fluctuating around 6-7K usually at 6500.Now I lig on to see Ectos at 9K (up from 6500 yesterday) and Rubies and saphires at 8500 and 8000 respectively. That is quite a jump. I have over 400 of each, and was buying whenever I saw them recently at 6K. I could buy between 20-28 before the price would rise to 6500, so to get to 8 and 9 K that is A LOT of buying, and buying at pirces that are a lot higher than have been widely and very recently avaialble. Doesn't make sense to me. No one buys off the merchants if they can hep it. I only do it because I have more plats than I have room, so I buy something I think I will be using in the near future.
Also who is buying ectos off a merchant these days for 7K or more when you can get them for 6500 to 6800(7K at the most) in TOA?
They talk about game economy and screwing everything up, but whenever they try to "fix" it, it gets screwed up even more.
My other favorite is monsterous eyes. There are now selling at 1700 per, up from about 470 or so last I cared to notice. Who in the hell is buying that many monsterous eyes from the merchants to make the pirces go up like that? They have absolutely ZERO use from what I have heard, and I doubt they will be used for anything other than a head piece or something (which generally requires only one of an item to make) SO why hoard them? Or is it just anther glitch that is a by product of the fix?
So to me it isn't a coincidence that all of a sudden prices for the materials that people hoarded yesterday have suddenly jumped up 20-30% in price. Ectos have risen 40% up to 9K from 6500. Steep jumps in a one day period for sure.
I am done trying to figure it out and what they think they are doing, it is obvious they don't know either. Trying to fix an economy in a game that is supposed to be about skill is ironic enough. trying to manipulate prices of certain items and materials is even more ludicrous. But it seems to generally be the result whenever they try to"fix" something.
