Monk Healing w/Keypad
SoulKEEPER
The 10-key keypad can be used to select the member you want to target for healing. I think it would be really nice to see a party number displayed with their name like the numbers are displayed on the spell/actions bar. If this could be done I think we could "heal by the numbers" much faster than using a mouse. I've tried putting the numbers on the sceen, but this only works reasonably well with LCD monitors. When you try to do this with a CRT monitor the alignment is terrible because the projected image is some distance behind the the monitor screen.

Awesome, this may allow me to try playing GW mouse-less. Sometimes i noticed trying switch back and forth between allies and certain particular enemy using a mouse is a bit annoying, of course if the group understands to call target this wouldn't be an issue for me to begin with... but wth
Sekkira
This is actually the best way to monk. I've been trying to learn it for a while.
umop apisdn
I usually play heal monk with the mouse and by clicking on the indivual names but when infusing, I always use the numpad.
Johnny Paycheck
the first thing i did when i got the game was remap my skills to the number pad. i use the mouse to move and select party members' bars. i know my recharges so well now i never take my eyes off of the screen and toss around really fast heals/prots.
96TSi
took me a while to learn it good but now its the only way i play with my heal monk
its fast and easy
its fast and easy
Autumn_Leaf
i've been trying to learn it for a while but i get frustrated cause i don't know how to type so i get the keys mixed up.
i sorta feel responsible when a person dies. o well..hehe...

In PvP your team members do have numbers next to their names.
lyra_song
I usually change my setup if im monk or attack.
Monk: Allys on Numpad
War/Ranger: Enemies on Numpad

Red Locust
I've tried keypad monking in the past, it just doesn't work for me. I usually have my mouse over the party bar, and use it to quickly rotate the camera around as well as to select party members. Looking around and maneuvering with the keyboard alone is just too slow for me. I need my right hand on the mouse.
Grimm
The party window should have numbers next to the members. In PvP at least. In PvE super-fast healing isn't really critical like it can be in PvP anyway.
Cottage Pie
I move/select skill with my left hand and select party member with mouse on the party bar, I often don;t look a the play screen...when I do it's "oi cottage you've got a shard!" and i go "wow yay! where..." etc...
thor hammerbane
So is this numpad thing default? If not, how can i set it?

The standard keyboard layout is a HORRIBLE design if you are repeatedly typing the same thing like numbers on the numpad.
I barely stand typing on it...much less playing a game on it.

keypad is the only way in pvp, especially if your an infuser - if i use a mouse when i infuse, i usually move the mouse too fast and click the wrong name :P.. btw does anyone know if you can somehow make NUM 9 select the Ghostly Hero and '*' to select Priest? It would be very, very useful.. i hope Anet is reading this

I once redesigned my entire keyset to allow for an awesome monking set up, but it turned out to be terrible for playing anything else besides a monk. Now I simply use the number pad on the right to select party members 1-8 (Factions will allow groups of 12 so this may get tricky in the future O.o) And I also set the arrow keys and the numpad enter button to use skills 5-8. Now when I monk I put my main skills on slot 5-8 and heal with my right hand while it's on the numpad, and my least used skills on 1-4 so I can hit them with my left hand when I need to, but other than that keep my hand on the movement keys. I also set Caps Lock to use skill 8 (which is where I put my infuse) so that if my hand is on the mouse for some reason, like removing a Holy Viel, I can still have a chance to infuse a char if I can mouse them in time. And to reply to a comment about healing the ghost, this is the one evil annoying part of keypad healing. If they added a way to select NPCs, (not just "Target Nearest Ally") then there wouldn't be much trouble at all. Hopefully they might add this feature in the future. Until then I guess I'll just have to endanger my entire team each time I take my hand off the keypad to select the ghost with my mouse

in your UI settings you can set a single key to select each party member individually. in PVP where you can see each players numbers, it can be more efficient to select them by just pressing one key on your keyboard. however, in PVE the party members are not numbere so in large groups its often difficult to tell when someone lower down the party list is losing health, what number they are without mentally counting down, which if course is not efficient.
i believe what the OP was attempting to do was to manual write the numbers on his screen, probably using transperent tape and a pen, but that is also not terribly efficient :P

personally, i have tried various methods. I currently (for all characters) use keyboard defaults for most tasks like movement, skill selection etc... for targetting I use tab key to target nearest, T for called targets, and mouse 4 and 5 to cycle targets (next and previous target). when I monk, I have just accepted that the most easiest and most efficient method for me is just to use the mouse pointer to select party members (and allies, which are not key-mappable anyway). this works fine since i really dont use the mouse pointer for anything else other then drawing male genitals on the radar screen.
(just kidding about that last part )
one thing however that does bother me the most is that i cannot use shift, alt, and/or ctrl to toggle keysets. what i mean is, in most games is a single key (TAB for example) can do up to 7 different functions depending on whether or not you are holding down the shift, alt, and/or ctrl keys. This makes it possible for me to use the keyboard to do just about every function possible with just the few keys in reach of one hand, while using the mouse almost exclusively for camera views and movement. This is the method i use for most games.

I recently felt a need to change my keyboard layout. I had originally used the numeric keypad for the party member selection and the row of number keys for spells (sometimes I also used the mouse to select the respective spell on the screen).
I always felt that this approach had some shortcomings. In particular, selecting allies/pets was difficult. Because of that, I have switched the spells to the numeric keypad and now use the mouse to select the party members that need the respective spell.
It has been an interesting change, and it took me quite a while (at least an hour ) to stop casting the wrong spells on the wrong people, but now that I am further along the learning curve, I start feeling the benefits of the new setup.

I keep my left hand on the numbers at the top, fingers on 2, 3 and 4, middle finger on the 3. My 5 most used heals are there, 1 and 5 are easily reached as well and once you get the hang of it, 6 is too. 7 and 8 are like heal party (or whatever else is needed for that mission/quest) and rez. I keep my mouse up in the party area clicking on the name of who I am healing and/or double clicking the target to help with dmg in between healing. This works very well for me.
Cherno
I love using the numberpad to heal. I almost never touch my mouse when playing. The only time I did was when picking up loot. Now with th ; and space bar I don't even have to do that much. I wish the ; space option only highlight loot assigned to you instead of targetting the nearest all the time.

is it possible to set up the keys so you xan have one when you dont monk and when when you do or do you have to keep changing the setup

What I'm failing to understand here is how people use the number row to do skills - use the num pad to select party members and.... how do they remove a holy veil? with their third hand which is using the mouse?
I personally use the mouse to select party members and move - and have skills 7 and 8 set up on the mouse - normally have infuse as one of them

Well the only way to remove holy veil would be to take your right hand off the numpad and use the mouse to cancel it.
healer of ascalon
Wouldn't it be easier to heal party members by clicking on their name in the little box to the right of the screen?
Thy Shadow Wolf
I find it so much quicker while monking to use the numpad. In the time that it would take me to move my mouse to the person's # and then select a skill, if dealing with a spike the could be quite dead by then. It takes quite a long time to get use to (I still start to sway in long matches), but once you get it down, it's much quicker.

EDIT: Turned my triple post into a single post.
It's official guys, mental math is no longer efficient. btw in PvP I don't recall the party bar displaying the names any different than in PvE. The only place numbers show up are out on the 3D field below the names. There are only max 8 players. the top is one. below that is two. the bottom is 8, above that is 7. the middle two are 4 and 5, and if it's not one of those, it's gotta be 3 or 6.
I totally agree. They really need to add in the ability to do combo commands with Shift Ctrl or Alt. This way healing with a keyboard would be awesome because I would be able to select party members and use a given numbered skill with one hand, and still have enough keysettings to be able to use other functions without getting into crazy keysets.
What's great though is at the same time you don't really always need a keyboard to play GW :P When it's late and I'm tired and I'm doing PvE the mouse is a tired mans best friend.

Now think of the scenario where you are preveiled and you want to remove a migraine before the conjure cover is applied - if you had to move your hand off the numpad first you wouldn't make it, and then they'd interrupt all your spells with ease - and the other monk on your teams let the same thing happen to him - all your spell attempts are interrupt, you die, gg
