Most dead monsters will leave behind a corpse, providing they have a 'body', some kind of substance to them. For example, enemies like Wraiths or Skeletons won't leave behind a corpse to exploit. You don't need to target them to use corpse-based spells, the game will automatically target one (the nearest to you first) if there is one present.
As for Death Nova; it works like this: You cast the spell on an ally that is about to die (people usually do this with Minions - raise them, cast Death Nova on them, and let them die.) If the target is still enchanted with Death Nova when they die (it lasts for 30 seconds before it wears off) then they explode in a modest AoE radius that deals poison (to enemies that can be poisoned) and splash damage to any hostiles in the area. Other allies will not be adversely affected by a Death Nova.

Death nova affects everyone (enemies, party members, other minions, pets, etc.).
