Think logical here, if you get the black widdow from UW.. wouldn't you think it would at least poison? Or something applying weakness.. SOMETHING. I mean, it's a good idea I think, as I said, very logical.

And a bonus for actually getting the spider from UW, just an idea. I wasen't sure where to post this, either here or suggestions and ideas, but this seems better.

Technically "unbalanced" for PVP. That's why all pets are identical.

Edit: Not unbalanced as in too strong, more unbalanced as in only PVE characters could get it.

Well then play pve, Anet talks about things being "logical", I seen Gaile talking in LA today. I just thought this would be a nice idea, occasionally poison, that is. Not all the time.

Understand what unbalanced means. If it was equal to any other pet that you can get except that it poisioned, even occasionally, then that gives that pet an advantage over other pets. So you would have to use that pet over any others because there is no reason to use anything else.

The game is balanced around PvP, and PvP characters generally being equal to what PvE players get. PvE players get equipment that does different stuff, but none of it is really more powerful. A PvE only pet that auto poisons? Yeah, that's unbalanced. Get used to it. The game is balanced around PvP.

Of course, anet could start PvP toons with spiders.

Then all the other pets are obsolete. The point is to balance the game so everthing has it's place. Whats the point of taming a Lynx if you know ever at level 20 the spider is better?

Well, you can tame a linx easily. But the spider takes quite a bit more effort. They probably believe they deserve something for the extra effort. I consider it just asthetic value

The spider is the easy way out. If anything you should be penalised for getting one. Its a lot more challenging and fun to get a level 5 pet all the way to 20.

Why not have each different pet have a different attribute. The spider could cause poison for a couple of seconds, the stalkers could cause bleeding. The bears have brutal mauling for an extra +damage. The moa birds could peck you eyes out and cause blindness.

The durations would not be for very long but would give an extra dimension for pet choice.

Then just give PvP players a selection of pets to choose from.

I don't see why this isn't implemented as-is. Even if they just leave them all identical, I don't like being stuck with a wolf all the time. I want a warthog.

unless they've updated the pets (i haven't used one in quite a while), i believe the bear is actually not equal because of its slow attack speed.

...and dont the spiders have various different armour and damage attributes depending on wether you charm an elder/hearty/etc.

The bear uses Brutal Mauling, yeah, making it technically inferior to the rest, though it's really not -that- big a difference.

No armor differences, but rather health and damage differences. All pets of the same evolution (barring the bear) have the same stats. A Hearty Spider is more similar to a Hearty Lizard than it is to a Dire Spider. Which pet you have rarely matters, but which evolution makes one heck of a difference.

lol, PvP this, PvP that. Not everyone PVP's, christ sake. I wouldn't waste my time killing a bunch of idiots and get nothing out of it. I think I have a good, realistic idea. Infinity^ I like your idea.

But the fact remains that the game is still balanced around PvP, whether you play it or not.

"But it's realistic!" doesn't work all the time, I'm afraid. Sometimes realism just has to be ignored or sacrificed in order to achieve something else.
A few examples of this would be:
1) Running around casting spells
2) Killing gargoyles and giant scorpions with your staff that shoots balls of light, or
3) Instantly teleporting across the continent

and of course:

4) Running around trying to save the world from a bunch of golden super-beings whilst fulfulling prophecies forseen by a giant talking dragon.

At the end of the day it's a fantasy game. And it's not geared towards PvP, it's balanced towards both an enjoyable gaming experience for both PvE and PvP players.

[edit: and I believe Jas D used the term 'realistic' to describe his idea being relativley easy to impliment into the game and not comparing guild wars to real life]

The game is balanced towards both. Any way you look at it, having one pet that is better than all the others in unbalanced, regardless of the difficulty in getting one.

...and I'd second the comment somewhere above that training a level 5 pet to a desired evolution and level 20 is much harder than capturing a spider.
