Black Widdow
Jas D
Think logical here, if you get the black widdow from UW.. wouldn't you think it would at least poison? Or something applying weakness.. SOMETHING. I mean, it's a good idea I think, as I said, very logical.
And a bonus for actually getting the spider from UW, just an idea. I wasen't sure where to post this, either here or suggestions and ideas, but this seems better.

Technically "unbalanced" for PVP. That's why all pets are identical.
Edit: Not unbalanced as in too strong, more unbalanced as in only PVE characters could get it.

Well then play pve, Anet talks about things being "logical", I seen Gaile talking in LA today. I just thought this would be a nice idea, occasionally poison, that is. Not all the time.
AeroLion
Understand what unbalanced means. If it was equal to any other pet that you can get except that it poisioned, even occasionally, then that gives that pet an advantage over other pets. So you would have to use that pet over any others because there is no reason to use anything else.

Of course, anet could start PvP toons with spiders.
-Loki-
Then all the other pets are obsolete. The point is to balance the game so everthing has it's place. Whats the point of taming a Lynx if you know ever at level 20 the spider is better?
Fluffyx
Well, you can tame a linx easily. But the spider takes quite a bit more effort. They probably believe they deserve something for the extra effort. I consider it just asthetic value
fallot
The spider is the easy way out. If anything you should be penalised for getting one. Its a lot more challenging and fun to get a level 5 pet all the way to 20.
Infinity^
Why not have each different pet have a different attribute. The spider could cause poison for a couple of seconds, the stalkers could cause bleeding. The bears have brutal mauling for an extra +damage. The moa birds could peck you eyes out and cause blindness.
The durations would not be for very long but would give an extra dimension for pet choice.
Then just give PvP players a selection of pets to choose from.

Count to Potato
Warthog > Widdow > Everything else yeah warthogs at lvl 20 look the best and roll in mud (Woot)

lol, PvP this, PvP that. Not everyone PVP's, christ sake. I wouldn't waste my time killing a bunch of idiots and get nothing out of it. I think I have a good, realistic idea. Infinity^ I like your idea.

"But it's realistic!" doesn't work all the time, I'm afraid. Sometimes realism just has to be ignored or sacrificed in order to achieve something else.
A few examples of this would be:
1) Running around casting spells
2) Killing gargoyles and giant scorpions with your staff that shoots balls of light, or
3) Instantly teleporting across the continent
Infinity^
and of course:
4) Running around trying to save the world from a bunch of golden super-beings whilst fulfulling prophecies forseen by a giant talking dragon.
At the end of the day it's a fantasy game. And it's not geared towards PvP, it's balanced towards both an enjoyable gaming experience for both PvE and PvP players.
[edit: and I believe Jas D used the term 'realistic' to describe his idea being relativley easy to impliment into the game and not comparing guild wars to real life]

Jenosavel
The game is balanced towards both. Any way you look at it, having one pet that is better than all the others in unbalanced, regardless of the difficulty in getting one.
...and I'd second the comment somewhere above that training a level 5 pet to a desired evolution and level 20 is much harder than capturing a spider.

Don't wanna seem harsh but where in the world would the UW refer to posion and weakness???? Maybe when striking your target he moves slower or something, but posion??? Ehhh.
Medion
Actually as one of my guildmates has pointed out, and as confirmed by Jenosavel her pet-guide, I think pets aren't balanced anyway.
The spider and another pet (forgot name ) do piercing damage. There are some skills which give more armour versus piercing damage. (Shields Up!)
And I couldn't find any advantage for using a pet with piercing damage, so you could call the spider and 'the other pet' worse then the other pets.
I do however understand you point that poison would be unbalanced, but I would like it if all pets would be a little bit different, all with their things which make them good and bad.

Ranger Rog
I don't think the OP meant that it should poison because its from the UW, I think he meant it should poison because its a spider, after all, thats what real spiders do. I think it's a cool idea to give pets different qualities instead of just different skins, so long as they are balanced.
sno
There are a few other differences to some pets, for instance the (presearing) bear attacks slower, but has a skill "brutal mauling" which (not confirmed) I would assume does a bit more damage. Also some pets do piercing damage, some do slashing, as mentioned before.
Also, pets have different sizes, which affects its ability to bodyblock.

I remember first time I fought a bear I was on vent saying im soloing a bear!! This is old time in pre-seering and was new, and I was like on vent "BRUTAL MATING!"? Than I was like ooo brutal mauling.

And Medion, I don't think pets are balanced either. I mean, they just somewhat "tank", they don't do anything else. No special features, just a boring 'ol pet. I love the idea of giving them special features, it sounds good to me.

I think Jenosavel is talking about it's correct type.
For some I think you need many beastmastery points and stuff, ofcourse, leveling a pet isn't difficult when you just take him with a farming group like barrage in tombs.
And Jenosavel knows... she made a LONG post on it

I think all pets should have some kind of special animal attack.
Diablo???
Besides having more pet varieties, I think pets should also get armors, functional feature and a gold-sink attire, it's a win-win situation!
ZennZero
Anet has obviously invested quite a bit of effort into improving pets to the point where they have some value (especially in PvP). I am guessing they aren't done yet, especially since I believe it has been confirmed that Factions will introduce some new pets. I think they know there is a lot of interest in pet customization (in terms of characteristcs and asthetics).
Yanman.be
you can also make your pet do pve stuff only..Like poison bosses only or something...wouldn't matter in pvp then
castanaveras
While we're talking about pets, we should be able to dye our pet as well.
I mean, all the pet looks the same, how boring is that?? I want a PINK bear damnit!

Wow, not one mention of the Dune Lizard, man they must be rarer then I thought, hehe. Seriously why should the spider get anything special. You would just be encouraging those "SPIDER RUNS!! 30k!! PAY AT LAST 3 SPIRITS"
I'm just as much a beastmaster as everyone else but seriously pets dont need anything special, I just cant see Ajax Warclaw suited up in plate mail or some warthog covered in metal spikes.

While we are on the subject, what is everyones favorite pet and why?
Diablo???
Warthog. Not just because Oink is the Ultimate-Tank-9000, but because he's cute, and goes well with my little farmer monk
