8MB? Sheez, that's very fast, I presume it costs quite a bit?

I'm on 1MB. *embaressed*

But whatever, 1MB is fast and fine for me, but wow, 8 times the speed I got now? That's insane, everything loads instantly, how can it get 8 times faster? Ooohohhh

6Mbit, lag free.

Although lag has more to do with the path you take and the number of hops to the server you are connecting to then anything else. check with your isp, do a trace route see if there are any slow nodes in the path to the guidl wars server you connect to if its possible and report them to the appropriate people.

Well after suffering a bit of 'connection envy', I am running on good old dialup 56K. Unfortunately broadband is unavailable where I live and it doesn't look like it will be anytime soon. Anyhoo, I run pretty much lag free. GW runs amazingly well on a very low speed connection.

Is it possibly downloading files when you change maps? If you paid for it online and downloaded the client, you will have to download the area files the first time you enter a new area. I have the retail CD version and all the files are on my computer. It takes me a few seconds to change areas unless the area has been patched/updated. Even then the longest I have had to wait was less than a minute. The worst thing I ever get is 'rubber banding' every once in a while.

I have no idea. We couldn't get high speed here for ages, and when we finally could, it was Comcast. I think they SAY we get close to 1MB download (much slower upload) but things like browsers claim files I'm downloading are going at about 550kb. So....1MB is probably the 'max possible speed' rather than the average we actually get. whatever.

Anyway....I get occasional spikes where characters suddenly move from here to there with no visual transition, but 98% of the time no lag at all - don't think this game is ver demanding in that regard.

Just wondering....I ran this test on a link given in another thread - the 'chart' claims I'm past the '1mbit barrier' but I don't understand these figures.

Quote:
Your download speed : 1292734 bps, or 1262 kbps.
A 157.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 135455 bps, or 132 kbps.
Isn't kbps the same as KB/sec, and if so, why are they different numbers? And why do browsers say 550kb? Argh. Techno-speak.

EDIT - well I went to another page and it said I downloaded 2993kB of data in 10.5 seconds, and another said I had a 1.2mbit connection (so that part's consistent at least). Numbers...all just numbers. It's speedy and more than fast enough, that's all I notice. heh

I play on 3/768 DSL from Verizon. No lag whatsoever. If you're getting lag you might want to try www.dslreports.com and browse their forums (they probably have one for your cable/dsl provider) where they could provide you with some info on how to find out what could be causing this lag.

KB/sec is kilobytes/second, and kbps is kilobits/second. There are 8 bits in a byte (there's a jump-rope rhyme in here somewhere...).

Enough room here, wouldn't be a problem LOL. I'll be getting 24mbit soon.
Atleast, my provider is working on releasing it shortly.

Yet again, the more speed for me to use.

God, US communication megacorps have tight a**es. 3M/384K cable here. Damn you! 24M... Is that symmetrical or asymmetrical? Holy sh*t if it's symmetrical.

What I don't understand is what you would be able to do with all that bandwidth, once your needs took you past your ISP's cache. The internet backbones in the US are close to overload at peak usage times. If that kind of bandwidth was available to all our broadband users, I doubt it would do much good, at least until they roll "Internet2". IMO.

Not to worry. Verizon's FIOS is around the corner, offering download speeds upwards of 30mbit.

I just went from a DSL 650kbs to a cable modem of 4mbs. It is like warp factor 9 to me.

From the Verizon FIOS website: Connection speeds are between your location and the Verizon central office serving your location. Actual download and upload speeds will vary based on numerous factors, such as the condition of wiring at your location, computer configuration, Internet and network congestion, and the speed of website servers you access, among other factors. Speed and uninterrupted use of the service are not guaranteed.

As I think I implied, if that kind of bandwidth becomes widespread with the current infrastructure, the backbones in the US are going to be coughing up furballs.

The 'backbone' of the US phone lines is over 50 years old, same as the power grid. I'm originally from England, and even thats way supassed the US in general net speed now.

Most US Megacorps just want your cash for as little overhead on there part as possible, they'll not spend billions to overhaul the network to compete with other countries, the network will stay in the stone age whilst some up and coming counties suppass the US, you'll know when it gets bad when some dude deep in Siberia gets better speeds!

Remember that big brownout in the NY metro area? Same way the US goverment will not spend money to overhaul that, thats a smoking gun just in itself.
