General thread. Where did your guild come from? Was it formed ingame? Did you actually respond to one of those ubiquitous recruiting messages in Ascalon (that always always involve the phrase "cool cape")? Is your guild just you and your real life friends? Share!
For myself, I was fortunate enough to already belong to an online community (OverClocked Remix), and basically when the game came out the people there who liked the game came together and made a guild. It's gone through a few evolutions, but yeah, it's still made up of a few 'core' members, all of us sharing that one background.
Your turn!

my guild came from...
being sick to death of peeps asking me to join their guild ect all the time back in the start.....
so i made my own...^^ just me and a friend....(who has since given up playing due to too many pvp fixes impacting on his playstyle *sigh*)
and the name.....well, i was watching a lot of FireFly back then ...^^ and since the Charr burned the whole of ascalon...
'take my love, take my land, take me where i cannot stand,'
'thats alright, im still free, you cant take the sky from me'
'take me out, to the black, tell them i ain't comming back,'
'burn the land and boil the sea, but you cant take the sky from me.'
hehe....i imagined everyone singing that in ascalon and then runing off and offing a huge army of Charr....^^, since thats exactly what they did...burned the land and boiled the sea, then replaced it with that damn tar stuff *mutter, grumble*

My guild was formed by members of an online community that developed four or five years ago during our Diablo II days (many of us got to know each other first on a D2 fansite forum where Gaile Gray was an admin, in fact). We started out as just a random assortment of people who played D2, but have become good friends in many cases, with numerous RL get-togethers around the world and a tight community that goes far beyond mere gaming.
I consider myself quite lucky to be part of it.

When I first started way back when, I had cape envy. I wanted a cape, and would do anything to get a cape. Rather than waiting for an invite into a guild, I started one a few days into the game. Not realizing that I wouldn't get my cape until I had two silver thingys (I have gold, how do I get this "platinum"?), I was merely a tagless wonder.
I was a one-man guild for about 4 months, until I happened upon someone in the randoms who was impressed by my tanking abilities (yes I know, tanking in PvP). Then another who liked my FoW armour, another from a FoW group I had with 4 warriors and 4 monks... numerous chance encounters filled the ranks at first until it eventually grew off of friend's of friends.

I created the best guild ever for a Univ. of MD grad: Tenacious Reapers [Terp] Made the cape to look like the state flag and every thing. I was so proud
However, I could not stand to spam for other members. So I found my current and awesome guild by posting in the "looking for guild" thread. Thank you, guru!

I already belonged to www.clan-da.com from another game that I was in (Sacred). I'd actually just left www.warriornation.com (think thats right) after a few disagreements on how they ran things (*waves to the wnx guys*) so I swapped in sacred AND in gw to DA. Been there nearly a year now and loving it.
The Guild I'm a member of, The Godless, are primarily comprised of members from the forums of the #1 Overclocking PC store in Europe.

The guild I'm in started in game. The 2 people knew each other in real life so they decided to make one. I joined because someone told me it was an Asian orientated guild. Since I am Asian I was curious to what kind of guild it was. After about 4 months we had to make another guild because someone ruined our rank.

Got tired of having to reject offers to join a guild, so started my own with family members and friends. Six of us, so far, and we PVE only. The most we have gotten together in a group is four, and that is a rarity. I'm retired
but the rest are pretty well tied up with school, jobs, and families, so a lot of times it's just me and the henchies (too old to put up with the crap that goes on in most PUGs).

Er, well I founded it basically to make communication easier between my circle of in-game friends, and we've added a few recruits along the way that we enjoy playing with.
So you could say in-game friends, I suppose.
And if I ever see anyone in my guild in Ascalon, or anywhere, "recruiting", they will be surreptiously beaten with a wet rubber chicken. I mean, do people REALLY expect to get good guild members that way? *sigh*

Our guild was formed for 2 reasons:
and as such, when we saw that one of the cape emblems resembled the journey cloth symbol from Uru, we couldn't do anything but use it for our capes.
- we all knew each other in real life (there are 14 of us), and
- we're all nuts about the D'ni culture (see the Myst series through to Uru for those who do not know what that is)

Our guild is a small subset of our BF2 Clan (TLB). Not too long ago one of our members picked up GW and started playing. He convinced another, who convinced another, and so on. Now we are an almost thriving GW guild as well.
Too bad our competitive BF2 team has lost it's edge as most of us are too busy waving around our Cestas and Flamberges to pub a lot of BF.

I picked up the game and started playing. I bought my buddy the game as well. We started playing and then created the guild, Disciples of Mordor, with the LOTR tag. My buddy ended up farming a lot and getting the hall for us (even though we dont GvG, but good for our meetings)
We played in PUGS and then found a couple other guilds like Phoe and DK. While playing with thier guilds we met people with the same goals we had. Eventually we started recruiting and we now have some of the members of DK that has joined our 20+ force.
We have a good start of people and we know each others quirks. We mainly PVE, Farm, and especially have fun...
