Right click on the Task Bar and select Task Manager from the menu that pops up (Assumes Windows XP). A screen with four tabs across the top will appear. Find and click on the Performance tab. The bottom graph labelled PF Usage will detail how large your Page File is vs. its total possible size. If this graph is mostly full, this is not a good thing.

Also if it is mostly full and your HDD isn't near empty then check the Virtual Memory settings by going right clicking on the My Computer Icon and selecting Properties (My Computer can be found in the start menu under default Win XP settings, else on the desktop). Again a window will appear with tabs across the top, locate and click on Advanced. Under the Performance area there will be a settings box, click into that. Another window appears once more with tabs across the top. Click on Advanced. The bottom section should detail some Virutal Memory (aka swap file / page file) information. Clicking change will allow you to make changes to this. If it isn't already, check the box that says "System Managed Size". I can't remember what the recommended guideline is for setting a custom size anymore, ever since I hit 1GB Ram I've never had need to worry about it.
