Minion Mastery is typically pure Necro. Whatever one skill to raise your minions, along with Verata's Sacrifice and Blood of the Master to keep them running. Some use Monk Heal Area or Ranger Healing Spring to suppliment, but it won't end up helping much. Max out Death, and bring a fairly healthy amound of Soul Reaping (If it's high enough, you can afford to use a wand and offhand that both have +15E/-1 E Regen and have a max pool in the area of a normal Elementalist).

The rest of the build is usually about your own survival (cause building a huge army and then dying will make them go rogue and kill whatever they are close to), and ways to get those first few kills to start things off.

There are some areas that Minioning isn't a particularly good idea. In general, it's bad in PvP. Bodies just aren't that plentiful outside of GvG (and even then can be somewhat restrictive), and until things die, you are only a half-useful character. There are also some areas in PvE that are heavily populated with things that don't leave corspes (undead, shadows, etc), which prevents your minioning. The Desert is the big one, though some sections of Kryta are almost as bad.

I believe none of the forgotten champions, rangers, etc leave exploitable corpses. The snakes do, as do most other creatures there, but not the black armored creatures.

There is also a whole necro subsection not but a click away who has about 5 threads on the first page with minion master in the title.

MM is quite tough but you should have at least 2 skills in there to deal some damage.

Deathly Swarm I always thought to be a hot skill in most situations and Vile Touch is quite good up close as well.

Not to nitpick here -- but as you wrote that, it sounds as if you're suggesting he use such a wand and offhand as his PRIMARY weapon set, rather than for an emergency quick-switch when needed.

Obviously, doing that would be a terrible idea ...

Obviously, doing that would be a terrible idea ... No, it's a good idea. Many advanced MM's do this. The idea is that SR is such a powerful energy generator (once it gets rolling), that the loss of two pips is negligible and the increased energy pool is a big help to MM's who are being overwhelmed (time-wise).

It buys you time to expend the energy before something else dies.
