Unfortunately for obvious reasons, turning off the HUD is not a good option... although I do that in WoW when flying between points as the view is breathtaking....
3D glasses have been around for awhile.... they are just not very "plug-n-play" which makes them kinda a niche thing. Takes a bit of tweaking to get things just right.
You need to be using an Nvidia card as they have stereoscopic drivers so the glasses will work with any DirectX (or OpenGL for that matter) 3D game. You also need a CRT monitor vs. an LCD (although there are some iffy work-arounds for that) with a high refresh rate to prevent getting eye fatigue.
Lastly, the game itself can sometimes cause problems; i.e. this nametag issue. In this case it is more annoying than anything, so I'll still use the glasses to play.
The WoW developers did an AMAZING job even though they did not specifically design WoW for 3D glasses. EVERY object in WoW is 3D. Thus nametags, for instance, actually appear to be floating over the head of the character and scales with distance. Here (and in UT2004 for example), the nametags are 2D objects.... so while the character might appear to be 10 feet inside your monitor, the nametag appears to be painted right on the glass. Hence, if you focus on the character, the nametage appears like doublevision... and vice-versa. Again... more annoying than anything....
Need for Speed (and other racing games) also show off the glasses nicely. GREAT feeling of being there.....
