So all that "GLF Nuker!" spam I see all the time is just my imagination? I play an Elementalist most of the time. I love the class, and never have any troubles finding my way into a group for PvE or PvP... I also have a lower-level Mesmer/Necro that I am toying with, and so far he seems to be quite popular for groups... There is no "proper" way to farm and/or play the game (unless you aren't playing it at all, and just being run through it). It all depends on personal preference and individual ability.
As I said, my Ele never has any troubles kicking arse or finding a group, even when he is set up with a Warrior secondary. Farming with him is easy, and generates the profits quite quickly (faster than my W/Mo to be honest). My Warrior/Monk is generally invited into groups the minute I load into an outpost, especially Mission outposts (must be the 15k Dragons Armor and awesome cape

). My Ranger, I tend to play solo, but he too has no troubles finding groups when need be. My old dearly departed Necro was fun, but his replacement (my Mesmer/Necro) is just as fun and, as with my other characters, has no troubles at all.
To make a more direct response to your post quark123, it really does just depend on how you want to play the game. I'd suggest creating a couple of characters and messing around with them in Pre-Searing for a bit, gradually getting the feel for each class. From there, you can decide what you like to do, and what you are best at. After completing the game, you can make another character with a different set of professions and practice playing them; it's always best to be able to fill multiple roles at any given time.
The best advice I can give you is to not pick your profession based on what other people tell you to play, or by what you read here at Guru (or other GW fansites). Everyone is different, and looks for a different experience. Don't go with the flow; rather, create your own flow to drift in
