Theories on farming effects

Does anyone know how item drops due to farming get effected?

I see alot of people complaining about bots farming in a popular spot ruining the drops for them, but is that really the case?

Maybe it depends on the monster being farmed - only drops from that monster is affected by mass farming (because that's all they're killing).

Or maybe it depends only on how long you've been farming yourself - total time online or in a certain area.

Reason I say this is cause I farm at Talus Chute just outside of Drok's Forge where all the monks farm too, but I usually get around 2 gold and 6 purple drops (not counting chests, and not bad IMO) after about 2-3 runs and with only 1-2 of the prior 8 drops comming from trolls.

Every serious farmer I know is weirdly supersitious. They farm in weird patterns, do things like carry certain things into an instance (my favorite is a guy who brings two stacks of ecto for luck), they mix up routes, complete missions inbetween farm runs, take long pauses inbetween rezones etc. I have no clue, but I like it that way cause the goofy stuff people comes up with for luck is hilarious.

I remember hearing that the drops are largely based on the number of people in an area at the same time (not just your instance, all instances of that area). I don't know if thats true though.

Well, this is my experience. I think it carries through the account. My warrior solo farms ettins but things have been running poorly. I took my monk on the same account and decided to get some of the ring of fire missions out of the way so I could help guildies that needed a monk along on those missions.

I did this for a couple of days and didn't farm with my warrior. I got my warrior out and all of a sudden, good drops again from the ettins, even the fire imps were dropping charcoal again.

I think this is built in so you just don't rotate characters on the same account to farm a certain area.

I've heard that story too,
to test it i went to bed early and set my alarmclock at 4:00 A.M.
i had to go to work at 7:30 A.M.

When i woke up at 4:00 i couldn't get myself to get out of bed and went back to sleep, i forgot to set my alarm to 7:00 so i woke up at 8:15 orso

Never tried it again

It works like this:

The more people farm an area, the poorer the drops will be.

Added onto this, if you yourself farm an area repeatedly, drops will get poorer.

So basically, don't expect to get much good stuff from the trolls outside Droks!
