Item name colors, in order from common to rare, are white, blue, purple, and gold. Gold salvage items should give you superior runes a fair percentage of the time.

Note that sometimes blue/purple/gold items won't have any mods, and using an identification kit will only give you the merchant value of the item. Rather annoying when it happens to a gold, but it's something you just have to live with.

I've actually had pretty decent luck with drops in general, but HORRIBLE luck with runes. The one yellow armor drop and the SEVERAL purple armor drops I've gotten have been completely devoid of any runes, I've never gottan a single major or superior. I've gotten quite a few minors from blues, though. Mearly an observation, not a complaint. To me the HP penalty is too sevear to justify 1 or two more points into a skill that's already at 12. My squishy little paper-wearing caster needs the HP more than the skill, and yes it DOES make a difference. I couldn't begin to count the times I've been healed in the nick of time with less than 50 HP (sometimes less than 10), a situation in which one more attribute point into fire would have left me with -15%. I wouldn't mind coming accross a superior vigor, though.
