have not played yet...but I have question: why solo builds?
ogami_ito
I have not played this game yet and I'm just trying to learn about it (I'm going to play in the factions event tomorrow).
I hear there is a popular solo build called the "55 Monk" build. Question: why do people create solo builds?
No...I'm not asking why people solo...I will probably do that alot because I don't always like to play with other people all the time. But why do you need a solo build in a game where you can have henchman for free?
So you can have a whole party tailor made for you, right? And although (I think I read this) when you have henchman you get less XP, you hit the level cap so early that this is not that much of an issue. So why build these "solo" builds? Just for the challenge?
Not saying solo is bad or good or anything...I'm just curious.

Simply put, greed.

Mainly because people want to make as much money in the smallest amount of time. If you take henchies or other people your item drops are split with them. If you can 'farm' an area alone, it is often more profitable.
Also some people do it just for the challenge.

There are some people that feel that henchies are a pain to take, they do more agrro.
NoChance
it's because any time there are other characters in your party (be they humans or henchies), the drops will be divided among all the characters.
(if you play in the beta event with henchies, you'll notice often the monsters won't drop anything -- that's because those drops were assigned to the henchies) -- whereas if you solo, all drops are for you alone.
it's a big difference -- if you, say, farm with 8 people or henchies, you will essentially only get 1/8 the drops that you get from farming alone.
anyway, welcome to the game.. hope you have fun this weekend.

Why not?

More often than not, grouping is more of a pain. You'll get at least one person you can't stand who ruins the entire experience. Not to mention in the later parts of the game when making a full group of 8 that will actually stay for an hour long mission is near impossible. So you're reduced to henchmen, who can do the missions mind you, but it somewhat defeats the purpose of playing online.
So, you solo. Wealth, experience, quiet atmoshpere... the sense of god-like power.

since when did wanting money=greed? they are NOT the same thing. greed is taking it to a different level.

Basically to exploit the game and make as much money as possible.
Yeah, like Ruvaen said, greed. Greed for virtual money that doesn't really buy anything, at that.
If you're new, don't worry about soloing, just play the game how it was designed: as a team game and have fun.

People solo for money or challenge. 99% for the money though.
Ninjutsu Honor Code
I solo because its tough and fun and i solo with my ranger not some ragedy ass monk exploit, it gives you a sense of stealth and infiltration (riverside?) or soloing iron mines of moladune is a lot of fun too cept marcus and his jades XD. I found it great fun to explore things solo to sneaking past large groups unseen taking out smaller groups, like this i found rotscales castle or the shores north of beetletun they are quite a sight.

I agree with this.
Soloing gives a nice sense of achievement when you clear an area for the first time by yourself.
Hell it passes time while you're waiting for your guildies to WAKE UP.

I still remember my succesfull solo elementalist build. Then you must think back on the moment you just started Guild Wars. Makes you really feel godly
And also because people said elementalists couldn't solo or run ... (whatever). I just proved otherwise (every profession has its pros and cons trust me). Ok a droks run isn't possible for my ele yet, but won't keep me from trying
The same when I soloed the new queen in the desert, did it once just for the thrill, and when it happened I was so content with my achievement (and I add, she had no green for me, but could care less, never even bothered to farm here later wiht other or solo).
Tarkin
Challenge...
I solo with a ele/mes or ele/necro or ele/monk (non 55hp)... just by fun...
If i can take money or skill points while i solo better to me i think...

Cobalt
And it is a lot more fun than spending 3+ hours standing around trying to get in a group!
Moa Bird Cultist
I solo an ele/warrior, for the sake of making her look as pretty as possible All money I make gets reinvested in looking beautiful. Thats not greed, thats vanity

If you beat the game, done all the quests/missions, you want, have the items you want and don't want to do pvp, farm for the vanity items.
But mainly allow me to have more money, I like black die and would love a 15k set for each type of ele and monk armor but can't afford it atm so...
You asked a loaded question w/o realizing it, people will be for solo build, against, or don't care and it can get heated and people will feel strongly about this.
Fact is Anet doesn't mind it. In fact they have an interview stated they have nothing against farming unless it cause's problem (in there eye's) or to stop bots / human bots - http://www.guildwars.com/press/inter...e-friday61.php
Play the way you want to play. Solo Build (challenge), Anti-Social (NPC's), or Team (Pve,PvP). Note some things can't be done with the 1st two in game.

I still remember my first first few weeks i thought THK mission was a great way to make money, i mean 1k per hour and the top stats armour at droknar forge only costs about 8k!
Fast forward 7 months, i now consider anything less than 15k an hour unacceptable for money grinding. But after you play this game enough, get FoW, theres very little to do other then PvP and try to find new ways to challenge yourself. Hence some people try to "solo" many parts of the game that are intended for groups of 8 skilled players.
The most skilled PvE players in the game dont solo just for greed, theres very little point to do it just for FoW, or that 15^50 Dwarvern and if you do just grind non stop just to show off saying "I play x hours, therefore im better at grinding" then it says volumes about a person. If you solo just for enjoyment and challenge then the money comes naturally.
In short theres mainly 2 kinds of "solo" players
Ones that do it just for FoW, Items, Chinese farmers, greed and bragging rights in general.
Ones that want to find things to keep the game interesting.
