I could go into Dictionary terms or tell you all about the quests in game that you need to do but instead I could not resist the following:

Asending =
Some real nasty missions that make you wonder what you have done so wrong in your life to deserve them.

After Asending =
Some even harder missions that make you wish you could go back to the asending missions as they were easier - lol!

Basically just a stepping stone along the mission path. Only other significance really is that it will automatically make you lv 20 regardless of what level you already were. Nothing else about your character changes.

It's just part of the story line. To fight the ***** in the shiverpeaks you need to be worthy.. blah blah. When you are worthy you ascend and then you can go get some revenge and save your people.
