I've tried to get from House zu Heltzer to Fort Aspenwood about 20 times now, with many different groups of people, and have yet to make it.
Does anybody have any tips/routes/strategies on how to get there? Is there a better starting point?
I'd be grateful for anything right about now.
Trouble getting to Fort Aspenwood (Kurzick)

Yeah Ferndale is a big grindfest in this preview.. I cleared the entire area out (took a while, with many rezzes) with henchies only to be given a choice of 3 new portals to go into (knowing that once I go into one I'd have to grind to another portal).
My suggestion is that you take henchies and fight south to the other rez shrine. then, head northeast (below the area with the bridge and the dredge boss), fighting the mobs until you get to the clearing. After you get to the clearing, you may either want to kill the nearest mob or two, or just try to maneuver as best you can towards the end of the clearing with the Dredge NPC. Once he is in site, run your ass off until you get to that shrine and portal. Then, you'll be able to run in there no problem.
Go very slow because in their extreme paranoia of the next overpowering solo-build and game-breaking runners, there are many, many popups in Kurzick-land (luxons, oni, and warden mobs). If you can't run, then go the same direction I told you, but keep fighting. It'll take a while and you'll probably have to do it again to get to the other portals, but it'll eventually work.
Ferndale is probably the most grinding area in the game right now so don't feel bad.
P.S., My suggestion would be to do the last dredge quest (kill Maximole) at the same time as you do the last stretch of the lengthy Black Moa bird quest (whether you cap it or kill it). They are very close to each other. This keeps you from having to grind into the center of the zone twice.

Ferndale, especially the part between House and Aspenwood, is quite horrible.
You have to pick up the dredge mobs as close to the walls as possible, because the central plain thingy is patrolled. Plus there are Oni popping out of the ground and screwing you over.
I done it witch henchies at my second try. On a side note, as an unoriginal Rt, I'd like to say that I hate the amount of interrupts an average dredge mob has

For creatures that supposedly don't have a problem with humans (the Moleneaux quest outside Aspenwood explains the Dredges' plight), they are surely vicious. I have a right mind to buy some boat tickets for Stone Summit and get some of these guys enslaved again. (Moleneaux be damned!) I also wonder how the hell they could've gotten enslaved in the first place. They'd own the Stone Summit any day. Maybe it's time they got their revenge on the Stone Summit now that they have assassins in their ranks?
Regarding the difficulty between Heltzer and Aspenwood in Fernsdale, I just think the patrol paths need to be refined a bit (or even a couple of the mobs taken out entirely). There are way too many times where it looks like you're fighting multiple, overlapping patrols at once, which sucks seeing as they have warping Assassin Dredges and healing Dredges that make our healing henchies look like the dogs that they are. This was the part that had me so damn frustrated yesterday that I had to take a break from GW. Managed to make it to Aspenwood this evening, albeit with about 40% DP on the whole party.

Yea, kurzik aspenwood does seem a bit tougher to get to than the luxon side.
I guess thats why the Luxon side is so stacked with people waiting for the opposite side to join... or maybe its because that mission is so fundamentally flawed.... a 'rapid fire area effect 250 damage non friendly casualty inducing npc' anyone.
