Slight disclaimer: Dragon Swords can only be upgraded with one type, I believe it is pommels, because they are permanently Fiery.

But most gold/purple weapons already have an upgrade (prefix/suffix) and applying a new one will replace the current one. It should give you a warning if anything is going to be replaced.
