how you know if pci or agp. both?

as far as i knwo i have agp but how you know if you can get pci. diff?

PCI is where your sound card goes and your network card is plugged in. It is usually white. AGP is on top of the PCI slots and ofsett. If your motherboard has AGP then that is the type of card that you should get.

i think he is refering to he new PCI-EXPRESS video cards as the old pci video cards without agp are a vanishing breed

As far as I know, Intel is the only one that supports PCI-Express atm... I could be wrong, havent checked in a while. I do know that PCI and AGP vcards arent that different. PCI tops AGP by a few fps (meaning 1-3 max).

Amd can have around 5 or so PCI-Express, 2 of which are at x16 for video cards.

Yeah I know im wrong, just checked with recent updates, well i do know that my comp wont support pci-express, i use amd (only reason i know this is because when i was trying to get 6600GT for pci-express, i remember I called for support, and they DID tell me pci-express isnt supported for amd, Newegg told me this). sorry for the wrong explanation.

This board supports it. In duel mode too. So AMD does have support for PCIxpress.

Staindreality you might try contacting the manufacturer, or looking in the manual for your computer there may be information there about it. If your computer is a name brand I am sure you can get help with this very quickly from their support. If you are asking to see what card interface is better I'd suggest checking with the company for what you have exactly as to if it's pci, agp, or pci-express as that would help. Right now too little information in your post to form an opinion.

I just read that it's simply cheaper to make pci express over agp (by a few pennies, but a few pennies is a lot today), and that the profile is easier to make in half-height than agp.

Okay. If you currently use AGP, there's a 0 chance of you having PCI Express at all. PCI Express is totally new. If you want to use it, you'll have to buy a new motherboard for that. You'll also have to buy a new PCI-E video card for that. This 'special thing' about PCI-E for video cards is:

err nevermind, im just stupid..

First, IMXRU, it's not your fault... what you read was about the Intel Chipset... they made an announcement that they will no longer be manufacturing AGP, only PCI-X. That is easy to misconstrue.

Second, PCI-Express over AGP is not cheaper to manufacture, BUT replacing two seperate bus lines (PCI and AGP) with MUX bus IS cheaper. Basically, PCI-Express has twice as many connections but mass manufacturing it will be easier and cheaper when it replaces everything on the motherboard.

Third, there is currently no performance boost over AGP, they haven't used the entire bandwidth of AGP yet so how is PCI-Express (more bandwidth) going to have better performance? It doesn't (if someone finds different, tell me, so far I've seen insignificant gain/losses). Once again though, look to the future, when video cards exceed the limitations of AGP, we've already got a higher bandwidth bus, so their hoping ot make the transition easier by introducing it now.

P.S. To tell the difference between AGP and PCI-Express, is really simple (PCI- Express has one "row" of connections in a row along the card edge where, AGP has two connections, one slightly offset and raised above the first row). This shows the difference in implementation, where PCI-Express resembles a serial connection and AGP resembles a parallel.
