Monk Question
Nlandge
I have played in the last two betas and have realized that I would like to be a monk. Not only are monks a great team player, but personally I hate it so much when i have trouble finding a party. I realized that to eliminate that problem, I would become a monk. everybody needs a good monk. So I thought up some builds and after a while i began to wonder, what is a better healer, E/Mo for high energy? or Mo/-- for power healing. now I personally like PvE so can somebody give me a suggestion for a solid healer build (of course i know monks can be boring but oh well )
oh yes and I havent posted on these forums much so I dont know if I am gonna get flamed for putting such a stupid topic in this section, so sorry in advance.

For PvP? Mo/x, easily. It's all about speed, and that's what Divine Favor gives you.
PvE? Play whatever you feel like, it isn't going to make a huge difference.

You're definitely right about people always needing a good Monk; I cumulatively spent probably an hour or so sitting around in the Co-op Mission areas trying to find a Monk to join our party.
And no, you won't get flamed for posting a question like that, it was a good fair question. And welcome to the boards

My Monk secondary has nothing to do with healing others, so I couldn't really help you out in that area. Here are some threads that have Monk builds in them.

I'd say just play around with skills and stuff once we hit the next event and see what feels/works the best for you. You'll find a nice combo at some point; check the Skills Listing at the main GWG page and see what the Monk has to offer skillwise.

Conjure Phantasm...*shudder* That skill is such a pain in the ass to deal with, especially if you keep hitting people with it right after it ends. The duration is short, but it keeps enemy Monks on their toes and can make people try to run away from battles in the hopes of regenerating some of that lost health. It all depends on what you feel you want to focus on; some people concentrate totally on healing skills, others throw in Smiting spells or hexes to wreak some havoc on people. Depending on where you are in the game, Smiting Spells can be very helpful, especially against Undeads in Kryta, since you deal double damage to them.

last BWE i wasnt able to play alot, but i did get to the gates of kryta, and at the very begining they sent so many zombies at us, am i right in assuming holy damage is what you are refering to when you say the damage is doubled?

You are correct, sir.
If you're worried about a lot of Undeads ganging up on you, then I would suggest pumping some AP into Smiting and taking Symbol of Wrath with you...

If you had max damage for the skill, you could be doing 54 damage/second, 270 damage total for the 5 seconds. Not a bad chunk of change if you ask me. Of course, that also means that you have to be right in the action for it to do anything, since it's affected area is not overly large.

True you have to be close to them, but if it even gets to the point where i'd actually need to use it then they would be pretty close to me wouldnt they?
I really just want to get a character through the world and explore. Then I can get down to business, and you cannot get through guildwars without teamwork. and i think the easiest way to get a good team is via monk, so thats what i will do.
I think I'll make a mesmer after i have monked it up for a while

I've played a monk since the first BWE, and as a monk looking to explore in PVE and do missions, you won't have any problems finding a party. In fact you'll be swamped with requests to join parties, constantly asking even if you reject them.
Then you'll have to deal with idiotic party members running out of range of your heals, aggroing 12 monsters and once and then running back towards you with a monster train. Or stupid necros killing themselves with health sacrifice skills then blaming you for not healing them. Or pet lovers who get really heartbroken when you don't heal their kitty.
If you're still excited about being a monk after all that, then welcome! Monk is one of the most exciting PVP characters to play, but in PVE if you're competant it's a bit dull.
Ensign put a pretty decent generic skillbar.
Good PVE monk skills:
Orison of Healing
Healing Breeze
Restore Life OR Rebirth
Healing Seed
Word of Healing {E}
Channeling (Mesmer Inspiration Skill)
Protection Skills:
Shielding Hands
Reversal of Fortune (comparable to Orison when you have good Divine Favor)
Mark of Protection {E}
the rest are basically up to you.
Final notes:
You can pretty much forget about doing damage as a pure healing monk.
You can also forget about doing anything solo- you just wont have the firepower to kill anything. You'll be hard to kill, but it just takes 1 mesmer or a bunch of monsters using Mark of Subversion to shut you down.
Solo PVE exploration is basically "sprint, healing breeze, occasional heal, hope for the best."
Remove Hex and Mend Condition/Ailment are largely forgettable in PVE, but are very necessary in PVP. It wouldn't be bad to have either of them.
If you really want to play a PVE character that can heal others and actually have some offensive firepower, play an Elementalist Monk.
They're not ideal characters for PVP anymore, but they really wont be at any kind of disadvantage in PVE.
Pick an attribute, take energy storage, and take healing prayers.
11/10/10 attribute layout.
In PVE fire is nice because monsters are dumb. They will stand in your firestorms and lava fonts, and you can drop fireballs on them from far away.
I can't recommend a fire/energy storage/healing character for PVP though.

If you want to play a pure PvE healer, I'd run something like:
Signet of Devotion
Orison of Healing
Healing Breeze
Healing Hands
Shielding Hands
Reversal of Fortune
Serpent's Quickness
Rebirth
...not a whole lot more to say about that. Put God Mode on the Warrior who takes all the damage and grab a beer.

I sometimes get that feeling too for PvE.

Lies! Ensign doesn't drink beer! Although I hear he will order pizza using /pizza.
At Ensign LAN parties, it's one or the other, pizza or beer. Never both. *sigh*
Though I can't argue with the skills he chose.
