Help understanding EXPERTISE
Nuba
Hi all,
I like the caster caracter type. I was thinking about trying a ranger/ some caster class. But i donĀ“t know if the mana reduction from expertise is going to work on mesmer, necro or elem spells.
Can someone tell me if its worth.
Thx for ur answers.

Expertise does NOT work on any other attribute class skills other then the ranger ones (beast, marks, and wilderness)
Edit: OMG!! sorry other attribute class "spells" .. damn picky

Expertise will discount the casting cost of ANY skill so long as it is not considered a spell. since many of the skills used by the caster classes are considered spells, Expertise is not as useful for them. you can find a table listing the discounts per rank in Expertise here.

Expertise reduces the costs of all Attack Skills, Preparations, Traps, Stances, Rituals, Glyphs, and Shouts.

quoting from the guide, "Expertise reduces the costs of all Attack Skills, Preparations, Traps, Stances, Rituals, Glyphs, and Shouts by 4% per attribute level" where glyphs are typically elementalist skills. i also believe that expertise now affect "touch" based skills since they are no longer considered spells.

see now you are just being an ass. there are two diff. meaning of the word skill here.
all skills are divided up into diff types of skills (try and stay with me here)
Stances, Spells, Traps, Preparations, the list goes on.
I was simply not being specific enough when i said "skills" thank god we have people like you, to throw every little error back in our face.

Well really, anything you put in your SKILL BAR is a SKILL. I don't see where the confusion is on this....

Yes, i understand what you are all saying. Skills are the things on the skill bar.
and i found something to shift the blame to.
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/skill/class/5-ranger
guru's skill page is in need of a major update.. as they are too blunt IE: Troll Unguent - Skill should be Troll Unguent - Wilderness Survival Skill so i wasnt thinking and went down this list counting everything that said "skill"
now i swear to god if i say skill one more time im gunna blow.

This is correct. I don't understand why you need it to say Wilderness Survival as the keyed ability as it is under that heading??

*sigh* mod's please rename this post to "Pick on Leventh"
I no longer am gunna try to explain myself. WTF was this thread about anyhow?

Hmm....not sure why Leventh is getting so antsy, but he was originally (and incorrectly) confusing the issue to make it look like Expertise wasn't worthwhile for any secondary classes.
In the description for the skills you have, the first words say what type of skill they are.
If it's described as: Attack (Axe Attack/Sword Attack etc.), Preparation, Trap, Stance, Ritual (ie. Nature Ritual), Glyph, Shout or just Skill then Expertise applies to it.
Seeing how many Attacks, Stances and Shouts Warriors have, Expertise is great for them. Casters only really have Glyphs and Skills so not so good though Mesmers have some stances, and Monks have Smite which is an Attack too.

oh my god lol.. this is sad..
look bro, a high expertise is NOT worthwile on a heavy caster sub class, i can understand a warrior, but for a heavy caster like a mes.. not needed. keep in mind, you will want to invest a little into the attribute so your ranger skills dont kill your MP.
