Most of those posts are from before you could do that and you actually had to capture it mid cast. Thats how I got it. Had no other choice then. 
If the boss died and you didnt get the skill, you pretty much missed your chance. Youd have to come back later again and find him again and hope he casts it again.
Worst part was when you got interrupted.
Now your odd of missing it are almost nill...

It stacks, but uses are limited pretty much to putting it on an ele with obsidian flesh and letting him solo the whole level (pve this is) with stone daggers and aura of restoration :S
I havent tried it but would be amused (but not surprised) to find out it stacks..... theres absolutely no reason why it shouldnt.

player: 50 damage -/- 40% damage reduction of barrier = 30 damage
bonder: 50 life bond damage -/- 20 damage of life bond = 30 damage
barrier then bond cast
100 -/- 40% barrier = 60
player: 60 damage -/- 30 bond = 30 damage
bonder: 30 life bond damage -/- 20 damage of life bond = 10 damage
