I Heard This Rumor...

... that some part of GW will be pay to play. You can run around by yourself and kill all the stuff you want for free, but if you want to do missions with chums/guildmates... you have to pay a fee. Please confirm this as myth or truth.

... No comment ... Oh, but too make this post long enough, no, its a lie.

What you probably heard was some sort of bizarre twisting of the way Chapters work. Chapters are expansions, released once or twice a year, that will add new areas, skills, missions and quests to the game. You'll need to pay for those, but you don't have to buy them and you can continue to play with all of your friends in the non-expansion areas. There is no "pay to play" system, though. There are Alpha testers, people who've been following the game's development for years, and even ArenaNet staff (should they choose to speak up) who can confirm this for you. Go read the official Guild Wars FAQ. No fee to play. Ever.
senorbender
Absolutely positive? I've heard from a manager at GameStop and an assistant manager at EBGames that there's something going on with a p2p requirement for certain segment of the game.

Will there be a subscription fee for Guild Wars? Are there any other fees, such as for patches or updates?
There will not be a subscription fee of any kind, anywhere in the world and there are no hidden fees. You will not have to pay for the streaming updates that will take place on a regular basis, nor for additional content that we will provide between the chapters of Guild Wars.

You'll probably have to ebay some items if you want to be competitive but otherwise no, you just pay for the game up front.

you will be able to play with all of your friends "competitively" in non-expansion area.
people with expansions may have more options...but has no advantage over your character(if you choose not to buy expansions). so you can play competitively with other people who has expansions...hence making "every guildwars family" fair and happy

you will not find the uber sword of almighty smiting kills in one hit
and the armor of unbelieveable stats
the weapons have item modifiers like hilts but then again you can get them also and they add a few percent to an item and usually a penalty at the same time
the difference is such that a good sklled person with good equipment will beat a average person with better equipment

I hate rumors..
To senorbender, those people were also the same people who listed at least three different release dates for GW months before the official date was announced. At one time, each vendor had a different release date when ANet's official say was "first quarter of 2005."
Unless it's on www.guildwars.com, or in a post made by Gaile or Alex Weekes, or a personal interview with the devs -- with precise quotes from a source that you actually know, mind you -- you can pretty much fling it over a cliff.
However, like others have said, you can run around together all you want if both you and your friend have copies. But if you don't have the expansion, and your friend does, naturally, you won't have access to the expansion areas, and won't be able to play with your friend. That's expected and normal.

It's a rumor, nothing else.
Yes, and/or if I said it.

er...if you have regular GW, and your friend has GW + expansion 1, you CAN still play with your friend. you can only play with him in the areas you both have, IE: regular GW.
Darkmane
You know I chock up this kind of filthy false implications to people that are soo ignorant- they have to spread their ignorace to other people to make themselves feel smarter. Agreed - maybe he did confuse chapters with the game itself. There is no pay to play. If you want to explore extra chapters you will need to buy those just like buying catacombs for DAOC or like Scars of Velious for EQ I. But at least there is no monthly fee!
I so cannot wait for this game to come out.. its just not happening fast enough for me.

Nothing will be pay-to-play. The explanations here are accurate (except Ensign's bizarre comment ). You can purchase chapters, or not, as you wish. You'll be able to continue to play, as you desire. We hope you'll support the continued development of the game, but we're not going to add advertising, or limit access to areas, or require payment for certain items, or ask you to insert a quarter to play another round.

It's Gaile!
I was wondering what happened to you.
I was telling Scapes earlier that you know ANet spoils us rotten when I actually notice Gaile's absence on the various forums when she doesn't post for a few days. Subconsciously.
It scares me quite a bit that I noticed.. How much of a forum lurker AM I?!

There are times (like this) I wish it could be posted on a huge banner in bold print,in very public view, saying that, so as to avoid the rumor mill.
That being said,.....
umm lurker? hehe no more than the average person. (lurk 2/3 post 1/3) maybe?

there is NO p2p. no monthly fees. the game, when first released, is 50 bucks. after that, roughly every 6-8 months, there will be "chapters" or expansions that will add about 2 times more content with every one. you do not have to buy them and can play with your friends in the chapters you both have.
seriously, can you call this store and tell them they've got it wrong and they aren't exactly 'helping' A.Net sell copies? *walks off grumbling*

Awesome, we get our own ArenaNet person!? AWESOME! Hi Gaile! Yes, LOVE the game. Its awesome to have someone that was involved in this amazing game talking with us! I honestly think it is the best game I have ever played. Every second I ran the program I was having fun. It is so great!

Guild Wars will be priced at a comparable cost to other first-tier PC games. The subsequent chapters of Guild Wars will also be comparably priced in relation to other games. To the original thread I noticed a certian person did not post again? Hmm. Got the point?
Now for my 2 cents. Arena.net would not put information on the package & back it up on all of the websites plus news or go back on what they said unless they ment it. Why? You ask? Simple
1. Fraud - It's against the law to state No Pay and then relase it and make people Pay.
2. Credibility - If they stick to there guns everyone will catch a clue that the product holds its own and the company is honest.
3. Support base - Look at all of US Were some of the funniest groups of people to assemble to back this game from all over the world.
Hee hee I know there's others, but that just the core of it.....

I've always gotten the impression that this game is being designed with the customer in mind: everything seems gear to making- Insuring, rather- that the player gets as much or as little out of it as they want. The "stay competitive" thing seems to have been a major component of the design ethic from the word go: even if you put the game down for a week, two week, a month, a year, whatever, and pick it back up again, you'll still be where you were when you left. I don't claim to have played a LOT of games but the one major one I did play without a level cap left me in the dust after a long weekend. My friends would easily be twenty levels ahead of me and would have to limp along until I caught up. I don't think that will be a problem in Guild Wars, unless I flush the character and start over from scratch. And even then, it won't be forever.
It's also harder to pick something back up if you have to keep renewing your subscription each time. Or paying for something you're not playing at the moment. Other games, I'd feel I had to play in order to justify the expense, that's gotta turn into a chore awful quick.
The expansion packs may well cost as much as the original game ($50 US) but since you don't have to buy them, that makes it a little easier.
