question on vampiric wepons

I have a question I hope to find an answer to. I have seen many using the Chaos Axe and its like and have manged to get a loucky drop of one for myself. My question is tactics related--- how do you count the life stealing effects so they become more user friendly?

Well, the higher the lifesteal the more you can counter the life degen by just attacking and hitting.
