I have a level 10 Ranger/Elementalist. The problem is I am not using any of the elementalist abilities at all. Do any semi experianced players know if this combination will get any better later on? Is it possible to switch secondary professions later on?

Later on you will get the conjure element skills, which add +x (frost, fire, lightning)dmg to your weapon attacks.
