how many runes can a weapon and armor hold?

I recently upgraded a few weapons and started to find other runes and upgrades that I would like to use. If I add the rune or upgrade, will the old modification be overwritten, or will it combine. And if it combines, how many different mods can a weapon or armor hold? Thanks.

I wanted to ask that and also if you put a rune on one bit of armour say you salvage it can u get the rune back? or is it one usage per rune?

the old one will be overwritten. armours hold one rune each, and weapons hold none.

EDIT: If you use a rune, using a expert salvage kit will get it back-although there is a chance of not getting it back. about 25% chance of losing it in my experiences
