Ettins Pauldrons - leather squares or Major Runes?

I'm getting frustrated... and I think its my own fault (again)
I've just managed to defeat several Ettins and some of them have dropped Pauldrons. On IDing them I've had Major Rune of Beastmastery, Major Rune of Marksmanship, Major Warrior Rune of Strength - great news. Then I used an expert salvage kit and ended up with leather squares - except for one time when I actually got the warrior rune.
When I IDd the pauldrons I had an "Item Unlocked" message - but now I've lost the items.

Did I do this wrong? (Should you NOT expert salvage these items) or did I just fall foul of a percentage change to salvage the rune?

you are doing it right

you have a chance of getting the rune itself but only a chance

the unlocked is for use if you create a premade level 20 for pvp which has access to everything you have unlocked (in its profession)

Ah well thats OK then, I was getting worried that I had done something dumb!

Just sounds like you got REALLY unlucky. I have lost the occasional one from time for time, but never lost 3 for 3.. Better luck next time.
