I notice occasionally (while picking up loot) that a monster I just defeated turned completely black.
I was just wondering:
Is this a graphic bug on my end, or is it just an indication that the corpse will soon "despawn"? (or something else?)
PS: I'm talking about corpses turning black when there is (& was) absolutely no necro around, I know they also turn black with certain necro "exploit corpse" skills.
Black corpses?

are you sure there weren't necros around? i have heard that the cultist henchman uses some corpse skills sometimes. depending on where you are, there are quite a few necro mobs out there..

I often see the mobs cast "putrid explosion" (I believe it's called) which causes the corpse to explode and causes damage to nearby enemies - AKA you.
This could be what you're seeing the after effect of when you notice the black corpses.

I have seen this a few times also. I just chalked it up to a graphic glitch, and since it doesn't affect my gameplay, I don't worry about it. It has only happend a few times in over 90 hours of gameplay.

Very sure.
Borlis pass mission, everything dead except one beastmaster.
Kill beastmaster, watch corpse of beastmaster in full color, watch corpse (and corpses of surrounding mobs were already blackened) turn black, with not another red dot on my map in any direction.
If I had to time it, I guess it was about 5-10 seconds after its dead animation.
And not just in Borliss pass (I guess it's just more noticable on a snow background), this was just the anecdote I am most sure of that there's no necro about.
Maybe some combination between a graphic bug and a despawn indicator? (maybe a fade didn't calculate well, and my PC decided that faded = black)
Edit: Lymix: I'm 100% certain it wasn't putrid explosion

Maybe the cultist used it for something else, like getting health from it.

I have not noticed this in corpses--BUT once in a great while--if I zone into a district with alot of players--there silhouette (sp?) shows up as completely black--right before it fills with colors and textures. Maybe you are seeing a bug in reverse--right before it disappears--you see the colors and textures go a second or two before the rest of it does? Just a thought.

I've seen this issue as well and I've also chalked it up to a graphics glitch either with the game code or my card rendering. It basically looks like most of the model texture got replaced by a blank black texture which I can occasionally see bits of color on. *shrug* It hasn't caused any problems yet, so I'm not horribly concerned.

There are stone dwarf necro's who use soul feast as well to reclaim health from corpses.
Kaiwyn
The enemy are claiming health from the corpses or exploding them rendering them useless for your necro to raise as a minion.

I've noticed that a type of Devourer uses that corpse explosion skill.
