When People Scam THEMSELVES
SOT
I have a buddy in real life. My buddy in real life is a really smart person. He is 32 years old. I am 26. Naturally, I look up to him in some respects, as he is my elder in years.
Today however, I wanted him castrated.
You see, my buddy thought it would be nifty to download some kinda editor for GuildWars, because some sod was in open chat spamming a URL for the program that would allow an idiot to do this kind of shameful practice. My buddy in real life downloaded, installed, and used the program. His account is now hijacked, and his password has been changed.
My buddy in real life has been offline for several days, so it comes to no surprise that, being that he was an active member of my guild, SOT, I thought I would check forum posts on my forums for why he was not around, since calling him is hard to accomplish. He posted a gigantic thread in there about what happened to him.
This means that, about 10 minutes ago, my showing that he was online 12 minutes ago means some other idiot was running around in the game world, perhaps doing things that give my guild a bad name. Joygasm!
Needless to say, I logged in, and purged my guild of all members. Safety before insanity.
My buddy in real life will now have to go buy a new copy of the game, if AN even lets his ip (is constant) access the game anymore.
People...If you cannot play a game without CHEATING, then do not WHINE about the fact that your l33t haxor appz destroyed your ability to play a game you spent hard earned cash on.

Yes he did. I, however, did not. Having some lunatic l33t fr3ak running around in the game, with my banner on their arse, proclaiming false bullshit. Now I have an army of one.
A positive note, I got to Kryta last night with henchies from day one. Something good to think about for me at least.
If you have a guild. KNOW THE PERSON INHALES. I do not know any other way to avoid such madness.

Account theft is a serious crime. Report it to ArenaNet. They may give him the account back if he could prove it's his and, hopefully, ban the scammer's account.
Playful Kitty
Wait wait wait wait, so he was the leader of of sot or are you? cause why not just kick his account out and that would take the hacker out.... but if the hacker is now the leader well um... your fudged.

SOT, please let your friend know that I am really sorry that this happened to him. Even though he did do something unwise, he most certainly did not deserve what happened.
Adaria
It was a stupid move, he did it himself but still I feel sorry for him. Common sense should have taken over, but still, I can't help but merely feel bad for him rather than feel as though he deserved it, even though he did it to himself, I'd feel horrid if that happened to me, with, or without, attempted use of a cheating app.
Loviatar
this would be under theft of account
contact GW with all the details including proof of purchase and the serial number you created the account with
you provided a snail mail contact address when filling out the account so they can temp close the account and send a new password to the official owner of record who can then reset his account
i hope he cleaned the keylogger off his system in the meantime

kidding aside, if a letter to Anet can fix it so his IP is okay, then 40/50 whatever bucks so he can play again is a small price to pay for the lesson he (hopefully) learned.

In another forum where I spend a lot of time they have a reputation system in place. And I've noticed that people who start to get bad rep soon plummet to the border of bandom... It's habit to read the worst in something that you expect bad things from. Her comment may have been a bit harsh but I hope we can try to forget the recent firestorm (more flies with honey than vinegar). He did in fact deserve it, perhaps Kitty should have just found a bit more of an eloquent way to say it though. :/
Adaria
Yes, it didn't really seem to add anything to this thread other than an insult...
Why must there be people to 'innocently' provoke the rest of us into flaming?
Back to topic at hand...
If ANet can actually do that, help the guy get his account back, like Loviator said, it'd be very fortunate for those who have stupidly had their accounts hacked by these keyloggers.

As a guild leader, do you not have the ability to kick individual members?
Redfang
I feel no pity for a cheater whose cheat program backfired on them.
But I still condemn the thief who took the account.

Hijacking in progress here....
Kitty, what does being a girl have to do with them laying off? If you say something that is seen as nasty, be prepared for the flames. Why should anyone here cut you some slack if you're female?

You know what I do to scammers, I get my whole guild to PM him "SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM" Hehe its pretty funny. But yeah Its sad to see parasitic scammers (Steal accounts and use them). I think ebay should ban game content selling, such as accounts and money. I am glad to see they cleared up the /roll casinos though!

Anyway, that's all I'm going to say about that.
Sorry to hear about your friend getting scammed... really sucks, but that's what happens when you try to cheat on a Multiplayer Online game.
Hopefully Anet will clear things up, though.

The best way to defenestrate is to ignore.

People who are claiming this is theft of account really need to clarify.
It's "Cheating" followed by "Theft of the Account". Both are wrong and both should be punished.

No worries! I like words, too... I plan to major in English in college next year, but some of those words I've never heard before. :x

Now then...
My buddy was my second in command. He had full powers to the guild. The moron who overtook the account with the access he was granted by my friend's brainfart, decided to start recruiting random people. The problem is, these people he added WERE NOT random, but were instead intentionally added, so I would have to keep track of all actions and hope no one was a mole. 3 of my people left out of rage because they did not realize what the ****nugget was doing. 4 others left because he was verbally abusive to them, abandoned some in mid-mission, etc.
I removed the rest to be safe. They are each on my buddy list, and I know several from other places, so I can re-add them when the time comes. If it does.
No, he did not deserve this. I actually, am to blame. I should have kept absolute control to me alone. My mistake

Did you tell your friend to email ArenaNet to try to get his account back? There's a good chance he'll get it back. However, all the gold and characters may be missing.
Jwh6913
hmmm.... I have to wonder about some people.
it's basic internet knowledge that any mmo advertisments for cheating programs are a blantant attempt to get a freebie account.
that said, that sucks. Live and learn it and maybe next time you play a mmo not to fall for any progs well except for skill utility or databases. those rocks!

There has been a warning every time you log in against downloading 3rd party applications for more than a month now, I fail to see how your friend failed to heed such a warning. If anyone feels the need to download a program to cheat or exploit GW then rightly so they deserve what happens to them.
On another note did you friend take note of the person who was advertising this program? He should report them to abuse at arenanet so appropriate punishment can be dealt out.

Hmm, here's what I think
Whoever downloaded the bot programme is automatically going to lose their account on GW. No ifs and buts... that person is asking for their account to be hijacked, removed and even spammed to the other criminals who enters the game. My sympathies go to the friends who got hijacked and anger/revenge on the hacker
SOT, I hope you are the officer, but if you're not, I'd suggest you remove yourself from the entire Guild and make a new one up. I know this sounds a bit harsh, but if you don't want you or your Guild members to take the abuse from your "hacked" friend's players, then I'd suggest you do that. And don't even bother accepting the invite for that person. Make sure you are the leader and officer for sometime before he goes completely, then recruit officers. That should remove some of the bad publicity, and he will have no friends at all.
If you are the leader of the guild, tell your officers either to demote or kick him out and bar him from entering again, until he gives in his Password. Once you have done that, tell your friend to come back into the guild and start enjoying GW again! If your officers don't do as they are told, It'd be best to degrade them until they understand what's happened. Or it would be best to do the paragraph from above.
I know that's a lot of information, but I hope this helps your problem, and if it works well, PM me or post back here!
