quick question: 'poisoned' vs 'on fire'
Venom
What would cause more damage to a player, having no resistances to either.... setting them "on fire" for 2 seconds, or having them "poisoned" for 2 seconds?
cristidam
from what i know on fire causes the highest degen rate, something like -7 or -8 per second (not sure)
egads
On Fire causes seven pips of degeneration (-14 health per second) whereas Poison causes causes four pips of degeneration (-8 health per second).
Venom
thank you!
fix dark
Poison is actually 3 negative pips a second, so that's less than half of the fire's negative pips.
Eskimo Bob
But poison normaly lasts much longer than fire does. Fire lasts around 3 seconds, while poison can last a long time.
egads
Poison is definitely four pips of health degeneration. Bleeding is three.
Crom the Conqueror
Poison last longer, and thus are more annoying and more deadly. More people get killed by poison than fire. Usually when you are on fire, it only last a few seconds, but poison, oh poison is hell.

Poisoning usually lasts long enough for a single ranger to cycle through the available targets and keep them ALL poisoned Its very effective. Of course, there's a great mesmer skill called epidemic http://www.guildwarsguru.com/skill/307-epidemic which makes Ranger/Mesmer a cool combo

However, poison can be removed. Most of the time in PvP situations it is removed before the poison runs the full length. The duration of burning is so short due to its effectiveness. Take Rodgorts Invocation as an example, an AoE spell that hits all enemies in target foes location for 91 damage (at 12 fire mastery) and then sets them all on fire for 3 seconds, adding an additional 42 damage in burning. Total 133 damage. Compared to Poison arrow as an example, say 12 damage from the arrow hitting + 17 seconds of poison (at wilderness 12) would amount to 148 damage. But that 132 damage from being poisoned is over the course of 17 seconds, leaving ample time for healing or removing it. Don't get me wrong, poison is annoying as hell for monks to continously heal or remove, I do not argue that it is a powerful skill to have at your disposle but if you are looking for quick burst damage + degen, burning is a very effective tool.
Morat
and a damage spike is often what you need compared with DoT to finish someone off... but stressing monks is always good too

Well, part of the reason I was asking is because I'm using Mark of Rodgort (16 seconds) with a fiery bow + conjure flame. I also have posion arrow/apply poison... Wanted to know which is more beneficial. As it stands, I'll be using conjure+mark+poison arrow. Helpful thread, thanks all
Rajamic
Yeah with Mark of Rodgort or Incendiary Arrows, on fire is much more dangerous. Even if they remove the condition, oops, there it is again!

does a lot of this not depend on a rangers lvl like wilderness survival?

How about being a ranger AND an elementalist? Then you could set them on fire AND poison them
