ok i wanted to make a thread to talk about the importance of races and how they can/should help/mess up gameplay
i personally believe that at least with an update there should be extra races
atm it wont really affect you by making you start over cuz it wont take too long to level back up
some races i think are important are:
half-elf
dark elf
high elf
wood elf
nymphs(fire, wood, water, wind, etc.)
ogres
maybe fairies
humans
tiger-people(not sure what they are called)
lizard-people(forgot their name too)
dwarves
halflings
and thats about all
so you can add some
tell me what you think
and such

Races could be good, but I'd like them to share the same model size. And the only difference between each race would only be aesthetics.
Or they could just make alot more diverse looking humans, either way. I just hate seeing a clone of me running around.

I think one of the more attractive things about Guild Wars is that there's only one race. Everything looks so natural, all the player characters look so cool. Adding races is usually such a jarring element to the immersion, because they're always so poorly implemented. Every time someone who isn't human passes by, you end up staring at them because they don't fit in. And frankly, why add more races? You can't go giving them inherent bonuses, otherwise you'll end up with problems like FFXI. You can't play a Tarutaru Dragoon, for instance, because Tarutarus have the worst Strength in the game, and every player goes to great lengths to proclaim how they want nothing to do with you. If it's purely aesthetic, well... I really worry about them not fitting in.
Linkie
If they have to add races, they should be purely aesthetic, else balancing them for all professions will be way too hard.
Also, I'd like GW to keep it's originailty, so please don't add all the races every (MMO)RPG has.

ummmm i hate same sizes
elves are small
high elves are taller
wood elves and dark elves are even smaller
halfelves are alot smaller
gomes and dwarves are about 1/3 the size of humans
the list goes on
i love seeing tall people and small people and such in mmorpgs
it adds diversity
you can say i am a wood elf and people will know that you are about 1/2 a foot or a foot shorter than most people

i really do
i like being able to walk and see a team that isn't stereo typed by race
aesthetic: i have played some eq2 and all the races and such are TOTALLY different.
everyone is a very different person
and its fairly easy to figure that out
but it isnt distracting or anything
after playing for a while, you tend to forget that it is so different looking
and you remember that they are part of a whole
it all depends on how they are made
if each race is made very differently, then they will look like they dont share the same world

isnt that unoriginal?
i think its original if they protray them in their own way

races sounds like such a bad idea to me, and wouldnt fit the plot at all (in my oppinion) and all the races you mentioned were MMO races, and as you should know guild wars IS NOT a MMO. if there were any races added i would want human dwarf and elfs. i could see these worked into the plot, but tiger humans, and faries. just no, i couldnt stand that. it would also be a hell load of work to add all those races, just think how long it would take to make missions for each race. i love guildwars, with out races, and i think it would be doing the game wrong to add them. and i know this game is a fantasy game but if i was playing with a tiger person, i would kill myself. i wouldnt be able to be the charector in the game, it would just be my pupet and i would tell it what to do. but the way it is now, i feal like i could enter the world and thats what makes this game so special (along with no monthly fees and extremly fun) and it would ruin this fealing by adding races. the other thing about races, is uaaualy they have a specialty like dwarfs > elfs elfs<humans humans > dwarfs. kinda reminds me of rock paper sissors, and takes away some of the skill part. because now all you have to do is run at the person your good at killing, and youll probably win. well all in all i think races could be the worst thing that could be done to guildwars (except monthly fees) and i hope they are never added
edit- and next time search befor posting i found multiple entrys for races like http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ighlight=races

arnt all those races in everquest 2?
i dont want this game to be like anyother in that aspect.
here are some ideas i could muster up
ancient trees(the plant race): call up the spirits from the surroundings
vines, quicksand, wind, ect
creatures (animal race): mostly melee attacking skills with the look of a random or choosen animal
bear, wolf, lion, ect
undead race: these guys are primarily life stealers and summoners, kinda like the necromancer but on a larger scale. instead of walking they hover like ghosts
theives: this race is equipted with small ranged weapons such as sling shots, throwing spears and javalins. they also would have a skill tree devoted to passive skills like dodging and speed.

Just because something works for other games doesn't mean that Guild Wars has to do it. If anything, I think it'd be best if Guild Wars never added any new races to make the game like other games out there, since that's pretty much what Arena.net is doing for the most part. So leave the topic a rest, look for the new professions as they come out, and be happy that we have such a great game on our hands already.
Arcala
I don't see how many different races suits Guild Wars. Only a few other races probably wouldn't hurt though, say Dwarves for instance. Just don't make it too many.

Hey I like to look different too. I will "never" touch a male monk primary because in my most honest opinion "I do not.. Want to look like a short fat hunchback" no offense to the developer who designed monks. Just not my taste, so the way they have it at this moment is so that people can distinguish a class from a distant. Although I believe the armor sets help distinguish it enough already. I wish there were more different diversity in looks. Bleh, but my opinions and ideas aren't thoroughly thought through. So bleh
.

dwarfs are allready in the game, we just cant use them as of now.
maybe in future patches they might impliment dwarfs as user characters.
i see no problem with that at all.

I think additional races are a good idea and would add to the game and its longevity.Additional races could add additional classes as well.Remember GW is a fantasy game.Whats fantasy without out fantasy races?Game creators have already said that there will be additional races and classes but have not said what they will be.Personally I believe that additonal races will add more flavor for GW.
William of Orange
More races will just turn this game into every other RPG out there.
Seems to be that every fantasy game out there has some combination of Dwarves, Elves, Humans, and Halflings in the game. Does Guild Wars have to be like every other game out there. What's wrong with just Humans? More professions later on would bring the diversity to the game to "keep it interesting," as will the new Chapters, new skills, and whatnot. It wouldn't bother me at all if Arena.net scratched any plans they had to release new races, as long as new professions were introduced.
Lets see, so far we've had:
1) Undeads, including Lich
2) Dwarves, although they're not playable
3) Dragons, even if they are bones
4) Charr could be considered the Orcs of the game, at least that's how they feel to me (generally wussy, like to move in packs, cause havoc, etc.)
Sounds like we've already got some fantasy races in there...

Why should every fantasy world be identical? Why is using the same old, Tolkien rip-off races over and over remotely interesting? Is there nothing to be said for creativity in world building?
What does it say about us if we want the same old rehashes in our *fantasies*?

i never said it HAD to be done
but maybe, when customizing your person, you could have pointy ears, discolored skin(not like bright orange but maybe blue and teal and such) and more of a better scaling system
i love being able to make my char look as buff in certain areas like legs or arms
and some people dont like the size of certain areas of their body
though changes cant be dramatic at least let them choose things like
chest/breast size
arm size
forearm size
hand size?
waist size(some people like the barbey type waist while others dont)
neck size?
thigh size
leg size
height
fat?
skin color(choose from a limited color pallette and then be able to lighten or darken the color)
eyes
nose?
lips(i might like the eyes of "face 2" while i like the lips of "face3")
ears(pointy, regular)
ear size?
ear placement?
hair 1(the main body of the hair, the part that makes up the majority of the hair style)
hair 2( i got this idea from eq2, i liked one type of hair except a select part of it, for this you will be able to choose a ponytail, or parts of hair that wil be on the back of your head)
hair 3?(locks of hair that dangle in front of your face)
facial hair(not for women)
hair color 1
hair color 2?
thats about all i can think of ATM but tell me if you agree and what you disagree on.
i never really meant to say that THOSE PARTICULAR RACES should be in GW but that i want to be able to look like an elf
and im sure others want to appear more/less muscular
and some will want simply fashionable hair and such
some people dont like big "bussoms" and some people do
i think THAT will all be solved with this more dynamic character creation process, no?
worthless
this thread should be locked like the other one thats about practically the same thing
Taranis
I think only humen makes this game unique and they shouldn't add any new races plus adding new races would need a totally new world, I mean are there even dwarfs/elves and stuff like that implantated in this game?? If not they'd have to make totally new areas and everything to keep it quite realistic...I mean where all of a sudden would this races come from?

OK Bootie, so say your appearance system is implemented. To what end? To be able to customize practically every single feature of your characters apperance would most likely take quite a while for the developers to do, since right now the characters are made to be quite realistic. If you want your person to be muscular, fine, pick a Warrior. If, and I don't know why this was even mentioned, you wanted a large bosom, then go with your female Mesmer/Necromancer/Monk.
Another thing I see being an issue with a lot of control over character customization would be that there would be plenty of people out there who would want to make the most annoying and painful to look at character which they could possibly making. Using some examples from your post...
Person A makes a Warrior, and decides he wants him to look like this:
Teal skin, gianty pointy ears, super skinny forearms, huge hands, an axoreic waist, huge lips, huge eyes, no neck, gigantic thighs, ears on the persons forehead, 2 feet tall, 300 pounds, pink and yellow hair, green facial hair, and a huge chest.
Get the picture?
Edit: And yes, agreed on locking the thread.
