Right now I'm using a E/R at level 14. It's my first real character (above level 10)

Anyways, the ranger skills I'm using are just for my pet, a level 13 Snow Wolf. My skill tree is..

Fire Magic: 11 + 1
Energy Storage: 2 + 1 (or 1+1)
Beast Mastery: 4

I generally use Flare, Aura of Restoration, Firestorm, Lavafont, Comfort Beast, and a couple of the Pet buffs that you get. The build is quite effective as of this far. I'm currently just past Yak's bend. Well I went to the city past Yak's and beat the mission there so I'm at the next town now.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could improve on?

Flare is good early game, but when you get to Lions Arch (after the mountains) youll be able to get conjure flame. Get this one. It adds up to 15 ish fire damage to your basic attacks when your wielding a fire weapon. While its not quite as much damage as flare, the damage per energy is great, really great, and you wont be subject to a quick backfire. In fact, everyone should stop using flare. i met a team of flare spammers in the arena yesterday, so i put backfire on all of em and they dropped like flies. Its not good for your health you know
Dont worry about pet buffs. At max, i think that confort animal and charm animal are enough. Try and get a pet bear as well, they do good damage and have good health, so they dont requite much maintenace.
Also, try pumping up energy storage a bit more, and invest in the bigger nukes, youll see the difference

You won't regret the added ability - for example, if you take Disrupting Lunge you can interrupt any skill by getting your pet to attack - this makes a huge difference - and because it is a pet skill you can do it even while casting a spell. Up to you I guess, but my Ranger brings 4 pet skills along if she brings her pet.

People can make cases for pet skills, but there is no way a pet is worth half of your skill bar. They're useful in low end PvE, and even then they don't do much.

I recognise your guild tag, and I know you guys are good players, but how many people have actually played with a high level pet, high BM and pet skills on their skillbar? The difference I noticed between having 2 skills and 3 skills for my wolf was astounding. An interrupt every 5 seconds for 2 energy is nothing to sneeze at (Though I don't yet have 13 expertise, it's my goal, currently at 9), and I can shut down skills better than many mesmers. I think you are confusing "damage" with "useful". I agree that they need to address the balance, there are precious few BM skills worth it, and carrying around Comfort Animal is the most annoying thing ever - it is a useless heal at best and I really would rather let a monk deal with rezzing him (if they ever make that possible...Either allow monks to rez pets or combine charm animal and comfort animal!). I know that if I can get the elite BM skill I'll be slotting it, at 13 expertise it is a nice 3 pips of regeneration. To be fair, I've never brought a pet into PvP, but I know that they work pretty well if your healer pays some attention to them and they interrupt the opponents. I have no idea if it'll work forever, I'm level 18 now and the pet is matched, and seems fine, surviving pretty well when we tried Lornar's Pass.

Ok, well, I'll give you some credit, we never, ever bring a pet into organized PvP, and I don't mean to say that they're terrible, just that there are waaay better skills to bring. That interrupt isn't bad, but what do you do if your pet dies? You have to rez it, whoops, it just walked into that AoE seconds after being rezzed, it's dead again. That's a lot of time that you're sitting doing nothing. Think of the pet as a warrior wearing low level armor, weapons, and an interrupt. Yes, he can interrupt, but he will also drop really, really fast. He doesn't get the benefit of staying out of range like you. If you want to run as harass/support as a ranger, go r/n or r/me and bring savage, distracting, and if you're /me bring interrupts/denial from that line. It's simply that you have 3-4 skills dedicated to having one interrupt, that's alive only very tenuously.

For instance, in the HoH, say you have a team holding, and you are one of the two teams attacking. You send your pet up there to harass a monk, it's interrupting him, you're bothering him, life is good. Suddenly, the other team drops an AoE on the dias, maybe 2, maybe 3... Suddenly, your pet is dead. You rez him. He runs in there again, his death is inevitable, since it's difficult for a monk (what I usually run) to bother with a pet.

In conclusion, I don't have experience with this, so maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it, because there are always better skills to bring.

I once saw a pet in pvp. But not for long as he died in like 2 seconds. =/

Onto the main topic; your only level 14 right now so keep the pet there kinda good in PvE up until Amnoon Oasis. Also try and get Serpents Quickness and Storm Chaser. They can help you with any energy problems that you might have.

I'm at Lions arch now and I snuck past Lornars to get a bear . Just turned level 16. I'll try out conjure flame and I might add some skills for my pet since I dont really need all that many skills in my bar for fire, especially if I'm not using Aura of Restoration (in a bigger group)

Thanks for the help (and the pet debate)

Will Ranger preparation (such as Apply Poison) stack with Elementalist Conjure buffs? Like, say I'm using a Fiery bow, and I use Conjure Flame. If I use Apply Poison, will I deal fire and poison damage? IIRC Apply Poison reads something like "Adds poison damage to your attacks."
