I have a Linksys WRT54G Router. Its a Wireless G 2.4Ghz Broadband Router. Includes hub. Now i got this for around 130 AUD, and according to today's currency conversions, thats 99.0501 USD, just right under your budget.

i would like to stay away from linksys.. not too fond of them. any others?

I will only use Linksys sorry, too many problems with other brands...so I reccomend..Linksys lol. I hate wireless, too easy to get your connection ganked. I personally have the Linksys BEFSR41, never had an issue and have had it for about 4 years now.
Leventh
BEFSR41 i think that is the one i have.. what version do you use?

hmm... why staying off linksys? i got a linksys.... the only problem was our tiscali broadband... tiscali sux...

I work for Cisco Systems and would have to say the Linksys is the best model on the market. Dlink and NetGear do not compare to the quality of the router put forth in the linksys.
I have my house wired (or rather not wired) for wireless. It's great if you have a laptop and want to game from anywhere in the house. My desktop is on the opposite side of the wall the router is on so I experience no packet loss during gaming. However the farther you are away from your wireless router, the better the chance thhere is for packet loss. You can easily increase the range of the router by place strips of tinfoil on the anntenas. Not only does this increase the range but the signal strength as well.
Wireless is the way of the future. Entire cities have gone wireless (Phillie for example). Imagine playing GW from the Liberty Bell.

As I said my problem with linksys is they made a crap router and their tech support sucks. I do not wish to support such a company that treats their customers like so. I would very much like to try another brand but am not sure of a good quality.
I am afraid (but willing) to try wireless, as I hear there are also many disconnect issues.

I've seen several posts on this forum about D-Link and how good their support and website are. Personally, I have a Linksys. My only complaint with it is that it runs very warm.
I would only go wireless if you have a specific and frequent use for it. Otherwise, why deal with the headaches and additional load on your PSU?

Have you tried updating your router's firmware to the latest version?
Leventh
yeah, turns out the new firmware is buggy.. there was one older version that was sorta ok.. but i cant seem to find a download for it.
termite
try www.linksysinfo.org they might be able to help you out with the problem.

routers... lol
I have a WRT54G with some hacked firmware. Runs like a DREAM. The hacked firmware lets me implement QoS which means I can play GW and whatever else without problem while my downloader machine continues it's mission.
Now, before that router I owned a Linksys BEFSR41 (v.1 model!). It was a workhorse for YEARS. Finally, it did start to drop connections on me. But hey, I paid $70 for it AGES ago, and after 3+ years of service, it died. Not a bad bang for your buck I think. A computer product that performed perfectly for 3+ years.

RTFwebsite buddy, there is a known issues with the BEFSR41 v.3 and the firmware they gave out is crap. And thanks for the link termite. But they still don’t have the older version I’m looking for. I try to google but I get distracted at firm*****s.

I've been using a Linksys wired router for 3+ years now (can't remember model, and don't have it near me to check)...the only hiccup I've ever had from it was my fault (badly spliced, and therefore shorting, ethernet cable ). I wish you could have found a better model...
I originally liked the idea of wireless, but it's tired me out. I had to work 5 hours last Friday night to get a wireless connection running. I know that it's the fault of the router vs. NIC/OS (router is my Apple fanboy stepdad's AirPort, NIC a Netgear WG311v2, OS WinXP. Apple never did, does not, and will not love Microsoft), but it's really killed my liking for wireless. It took me 3 minutes to get my wired connection running when I returned the computer to its normal place.
I'm having better luck now because apparently Windows and Apple WEP do not like each other. We shut off the WEP and turned on MAC address filtering instead, and used a Linksys wireless card...runs alright, but there's the unavoidable latency issue with 70', one wall, and 2 floors between the computer and the router. Surprisingly we're getting a 60% connection. I think I'll be keeping my own computer wired for a looong time.
