Why I haven't joined a guild
Phantom Force
Since I've been playing I've had a 16 N/Me, 20 W/Mo, 13 Mo/N that I've spent time playing. In every case whenever I'm in town and without fail I get an invitation to a guild by people I don't even know. I fail to see the point in joining a guild where I do not know one person and that will just invite openly. In my experience open invites tend to lead to disasters especially seeing you get such a broad range of players (not even considering PvP PvE aspects). I'd prefer to play with people who have some level of intelligence and integrity that do not act like immature 12 year olds all the time. I know there have several posts about guilds and I saw one saying well maybe if they don't get 10 members in a week they should automatically remove the guild. This idea is okay and would help get rid of low member guilds. I have a good friend who joined a guild and now he's the only one in it and he didn't start it because the other people left or don't play anymore. I'd like to start my own guild or join one, but my problem that exists is there are too many lame guilds giving free invites to joe blows just to try and claim how they have over 50-100 participating members. Whoop-di-do-da!!!! And this helps how? As it rests now I do not plan on joining a guild unless I actually start seeing the more players repetitively or I make my own and start inviting people I think might be worthwhile. I have to say just because you have a guildhall and 100 members, to me, it doesn't mean a D*** thing. Talk about going from trade spam to guildspam. Yikes.

this was an important and useful post

There are many many guilds out there that do not advertise and that have long trial periods before invites are offered.Thereare some that only allow older players and that have a structured abuse policy. Ours for example frowns on selling between guild memebers its either a gift or nothing. Many just focus on PvE only. There is hundreds of guilds that are under the broadcasting billboard guilds you come in contact with spamming members.

I agree with most of the post. I don't think random invitations work out well and I've never excepted any of them either.
What I don't agree with is the low member guild removal. Some people would like to have a small guild and it wouldn't be fair to those people. Also, it would be a motivator to create this guildspam that you speak of.

I think one of the big reasons for a guild is to meet other players and make bonds in game. So yes i recruit strangers hoping to make friends. If it doesn't work out then they leave the guild no harm no foul.
I also like small guilds mine is and is just fine that way

I can't say I really recruit random strangers, but my guild is always open to drawing in more people. Sometimes you just have to give a guild a chance, you won't know how personalities will react you never ty out any of the various guilds.
Alzbeta
My guild only recruits members that at least one existing member can vouch for in full confidence. If you vouch for someone who ends up being an unhelpful, inactive moron, both of you are out. The obvious result of this is that our guild is very small, but we're friendly and helpful with one another. I tried a couple of guilds before I really felt comfortable, and I went with one with an officer I'd spent a lot of time with (even before he was in the guild). Good luck in your search.

Someone you've only played with once or twice is a random stranger. Inviting someone you've never talked to or met is absurd IMO. Yes you have officer and guild leaders to remove people, but by the time you find out that you've got some stupid a$$ in your guild it's usually too late. Damage has already been done and many people are upset or have left because of the moron that was allowed in a guild.
As for low guild members, that is fine if you have say 10. 10 members is good and small number. I have some close friends that I want to do a guild with but having just 2-3 members seems kinda lame. I may start one and recruit members as I meet people I think are worthwhile and have similar interests but otherwise I'll wait and hope to find a good one.

You just haven't met the right guild yet. People have been added to my small guild slowly because of their merits as team players and good all around people. However the circumstances of their joining have been varied.
One member of my guild was added after lengthy periods of group play. He was in another guild at the Time but after a while it seemed pretty obvious that we would all be better off if he joined us.
Another member signed up after a five minute exchange about the history of my guild's namesake after he whispered "nice cape."
So far all members of my guild (long Time friends and new members) get along well and we have fun playing together when we can.
Bottom line is you never know how things may work out, so keep an open mind.

I would be against a guild limit/restrictions to creating them myself. There are other games that do that already.
Although, if they had some kind of option for non-Guild people to make themselves a nifty cape as a fashion statement, I might partially withdraw that objection.
However, a friend has a Guild, and because it's based on a very small forum community, it's numbers are small. Maybe it'll get bigger, but if you were to limit it to 10 he could never have made it or it would've been deleted etc.
I do agree, however, that perhaps a feature that disbands inactive guilds might be useful. Perhaps...no activity by any Guild member over 2-3 months = Guild go poof? (maybe they already have something like that in place, not sure...)
As to all the non-solicited spam-invites one can get - eh...they don't bother me. I just ignore them and reject at my leisure.

In order for our guild to invite you you have to play in Tombs with us on several occasions. Or just once if we're really impressed.

I think that the GW community needs much more time to grow and mature before they start putting more restictions on guilds. At this point I would think it's safe to say that poorly run guilds will shut them selves down, and the small guilds will either grow, merge, or die.
Keep in mind that people form guilds for many different reasons. It will take time see which were formed for good reasons and which were formed for bad.

There are many guilds, some just for helping each other around, others for high level pvp. Before joining a guild it would be wise to get some information first. I did not join until now because joining is definite. And I would like to try out first. Just like some guilds would like to test the skills of candidate members first. Thats just fair. I think if it wasn't to prevent spying, it would be far better to allow people to join and leave guilds whenever they like. Maybe it should be possible to leave with a penalty of not joining a new guild for a month or so?

Our little Guild is kinda whimpy. My daughter was the second to join, then after a while the leader quit and gave it to her. She added me, made me an officer. My daughter is young, so her "leadership abilities" are limited. I try to help her out, but then again I am DAD. Dads seem to be BOSSY to teenagers. So I walk on egg shells with her. I have chatted with a few of the other guild members and I have one decent relationship with one powerful gal in it, but you are right you need to KNOW who you are dealing with. I have thought of joining another guild just to get more involved however, I like to be able to keep tabs on my daughter. Make sure she is SAFE from CREEPS. I wish I had more time to play. Just not in the cards. My wife is real sick of this game already, however, she likes that fact that Dad & Daughter are doing something together. So she will put up with it. It would be cool to get a Hall down the road, but I will not pay over 25K for it. I can see the possiblities of having a Guild Hall when more updates come out. Like it becoming a mini town w/ training areas and such.
EDIT: Another thing I do like about our Guild is the Capes we have. We have gotten more praise for our cape design then our playing skills. At least we look cool .

I don't understand why Guilds will randomly invite... do they think that a larger number of people will make it a better guild?
My boyfriend and I started a guild, and so far we've only invited friends and one person who seemed very nice and a good player. (He did very well during a Fissure run.)
We have barely anyone in our guild, but that's just fine with me. I'd rather have a few members who are nice and skilled at the game than a hoarde of morons. (Not to say that people not in our guild are morons!)
We invited another person the other day who we met during the second to last mission, unfortunately he wanted to remain guildless.

to me, guild members that spam out "we have capes and a guild hall!" mean that they apparently just told you the only positive things about their guild.
with ours, i don't think we've asked a single person we've met on GW to join our guild. usually they will be partied with some of us and will ask if we have any openings.

I apoligize in advance for my advertising in towns. I promise that I only say it once whenever I'm in a district. My problem is that whenever I do get good people in groups ether leave before I can ask, or never respond. So I'm kinda forced into asking in town. I've never said anything about capes or halls when I adverstise. There seems to be alot of fashion obessed people in GW

One man guilds are pathedic and egotistical, especially when the tag is your name abbreviated. I on the otherhand run a two man guild. We focus on being gentlemen while we hunt for guild virgins which are just about as hard to find in guild wars as they are in real life.

Ok, I'm jumping in late here(sorry), so I haven't read everyones wonderful posts on this topic...so I'm going to focus on what's near the bottom.
I agree that advertising in towns is a little weak, but I can also understand how that's the way a lot of casual players get in to guilds to just have fun. For deeper guilds, I think they should be in a party with you first, do a mission or quest perhaps, and while you're in that party, have that be your trial version of being in that guild...because that's pretty much what you do(unless you're going Hall of Heroes Hardcore with the PvP), and if you don't spend the time doing that with people, then you'll never know if they're worth having. My friend and I are about to start a guild...perhaps...We're both saving up for a Guild Hall(not the full blown 90k for the hall, about 40k or so) and that's pretty much how I'd like to get members, doesn't need to be special or anything, but I'd at least like to know the employer/employee before signing my days to them...

There are dozens of guild listings online, even here on this site there's a big shwack listed. That's how I found my guild - wandered through a bunch of different listings visiting the pages of all the websites that interested me, found one that looked good AND had a screening process (email interview, and kicked out if people don't like you in the guild) and I really like 'em so far. Haven't grouped with them, but they're great for Q&A'ing and just being great people

I seen advertisement but no invites to me, perhaps because I run in european servers this have not reach the levels that in some other servers.
I think some people make "one player guild" to get a cape.
As for entering the guilds ... well I am lv 15 and "guildless" (and wish to remain that way for the time being) but after the Lion's Gate mission I can understand why people want to join a guild ... getting help for the co-op missions were henchman are not exactly the best choice, nothing does say being on a guild will help you pass a mission but still a well organized guild with dedicated members (meaning those lv20 that instead of farming go out and help a fellow lv 10 guild member to pass a mission and get the bonus) can make all the diference ... not that a team of random people cannot but changes you end up with a unbalanced group or with someone that log out at half the mission are as big as being in a bad guild.

I have a policy regarding guilds. If my invitation consists of an unannounced 'you have 1 guild invitation', followed shortly afterwards by someone jumping in front of me saying 'join guild' over and over, I kick them between the legs and move on.

I once joined a guild. Briefly. They seemed most interested in just blasting through the missions as quickly as possible while chatting inanely the entire time. As soon as the mission was over, I left the guild.

Problem I said with vent/ts is that: 1) From my experience people tend to not invite you as much for tombs and some arena pvp if you don't have ts/vent. 2) I have far too much to worry about aside from listening to players talk to each other. I'm not going to list them all like I did before. But in my experience (I'm not saying it occurrs everywhere and everytime) I hardly get to do tombs and stuff because some people are discriminating because you don't have ts/vent.

To be Frank, If a guild had a low amount of people it might be just a group of rl friends just wanting to play together and have a cape and a guild hall!

You may see it that way, but you obvisouly don't have the lifestyle and same type of things going on as I do. If you ever played FFXI and got anywhere, you didn't need voice coms to communicate and play effectively. I'm not saying it isn't a nice feature but for people to tell others that sorry we don't want you or kick you out because you don't use the vent/ts then that is discrimination in my book. Just b/c you have ts/vent doesn't mean your half as good a player as "Bob the Dork" who doesn't use it. People have many reasons for choosing not to use it or can't use it, doesn't change the fact they are a good player. Except anyone unwilling to try and see how good will never know will they.
Viruzzz
if you don't use vent or ts. you can't say its not better with it.
as a person constantly on vent. i can safely say it cuts time off everything. its faster to say something that to type it out..
and if you're on vent with the people in the group. they can't just leave you in the middle of a mission without giving a reason (unless they drop connection or something) i hate the times when i've tried to complete some mission. starting with a 6 man party. i end up completing the mission on my own. or having 1 teammate with me.
i was trying to get a character to ring of fire. and i needed to do thunderhead keep (obviously...) so we get a 7-man party together and bring a henchman. only to have 4 leave in the first 30 seconds because: "why are you doing this? i wanted to go to the grotto. you suck!" and "so 2 people left. we might be able to do it. but it will take another 15 minutes. screw them. i don't wanna actually work for this"
how can you tell if <class> LFG means mission or some outpost/explorable area/rune farming(like the people used to do in gates of kryta. join a random party and go drake hunting)
so this started out about how well vent works.. ended with how much i hate pick up groups.. which is why i rarely do them

Vent/TS. It isn't about weather or not it is a better experience. It was about people kicking / not allowing a person into the party (or guild) based on whether or not they have Vent/TS. That is Discrimination. As mentioned though, these people without Vent/TS can be good players and in denying them a chance to prove it, any party (or guild) is merely hurting themselves.
As a sidenote: I don't have Vent/TS... based on what I've heard about either software I'm not sure I'd want it. However, in playing Counter Strike Source, I enjoy the voice communication built in, and yes it does make for a better overall experience. More so because it isn't 'always on'. You have to press a button to activate it, thus I don't have to listen to everyone's breathing, and shouting for that matter. I'm just as good at snipering with or without the voice communication though.
Anyway, back to another issue I read about here. The Guild size restriction idea = bad idea. I am a member of a small guild, currently there are five of us. We all know each other in real life, and thus trust each other. We do plan in growing the size in the future, as I for one would love to get into GvG when I get to that point in the game. But with such a limitaion (must have 10 people) our guild would be deleted and that is simply not right. From reading posts on these forums, there are actually a few people I'd like to meet in the game, simply because they sound like mature and intelligent people here. One such person mentioned being a member of a small guild as well. A thought sparkles in my mind about merging... but that's something I can look into with that party if they're interseted.

well i got vent & teamspeak both , & while they do indeed improve ingame communications for the lazy typers, i personally couldnt be buggered pushing down the up arrow everytime i wanted to talk , that & no doubt my noisy kids would jump on & think they ran a radio station.. <_<
vent helps but should not be a requisite for guilds , but then again thats what helps guilds hold a personality tho so its thier choice.
me i couldnt find a guild for me so i just opened a guildwars chapter for my beloved Utopia guild, gets a bit lonely but im sure itll fill up (if you build it they will come) sorta thing^^
Sigh.. is it just me or are most guildwars players , Negative & judgemental? ingame i ask for help or party i either get ignored or insulted , majority of posts here are bitch after moan after whine.. is it the competitiveness? im only just nearing lvl16 my first real char so i spose im just "noob".. anywayz guild or no guild it only matters that you enjoy the game & play it the best you can---or not, & make interesting friends from all over the world.
hmmm
Do you play to win, for fun , or both ? you decide, dun bitch at others for choosing different.

This is exactly why my guild is so small, i rarely ever find someone I would want to invite, but when I do, they're already in a guild (which probably doesn't have much activity anyway).

Does it really matter if there are only a few (or even only one) members in a Guild. Does it affect performance? Does it affect other people in the GW community?
I created a guild because I thought I may as well spend my hard-earned gold on a nice cape. I will start recruiting at some stage - once I understand how the process works. ie: finding sensible, mature, friendly & helpful people in a community that seems to be overrun by people who do not meet this criteria.

Well I originally thought that if you have a guild smaller, say less than 8 people, then they shouldn't allow the guild. Since I started the post I've joined 3 different guilds which I tried based on talking to a current member. In that time all but one of the guilds disbanded. Leaders left, officers left, etc. etc. In the other guild it was just a few people who were acting like 12 year olds. Thus I think I will still stay away from a guild unless I get to know someone well and they can say their guild doesn't suck and won't break up in a day or two. I'd prefer to just get my own damn cape and guild and I'd be happy with that at this point.
As for discrimination towards people who don't use ts/vent, which was talked about before, I will NEVER use it. I could care less what some loser on the other end thinks. TS/Vent may be useful and give a slight advantage, but I'd like to see the proof. I'm sure the major PvP'ers use it, but they've also been PvP'ing a lot more than anyone else. I guarantee if you have a good group of 8 who play together a lot, have PvP'd and understand the game well. They could do just as well if not better than those with ts/vent. Not to mention who wants to listen to a 15 year old on vent/ts acting like a retard. I work in public school systems and see/hear enough crap from them in a day. Don't need it in a game I enjoy playing.

I collect guild invitations. I had about 10 at one point before I goofed around with making a guild and cape for about 5 minutes, then went back to being guildless. XD
