Black Dye: Supply and Demand
TopGun
For the life of me, I cannot figure this. WHY is Black dye so valued by the playerbase? I have no problem with it being this way, but I can't see why its SO high in demand that the prices are skyrocketing that high. Is it just rarer? Is it a more valuable component of mixed dyes? I don't get it.

I think its cause everyone wants that 'bad boy' image the Fonsie instilled in all of us.

Most people like badass black armor, I guess. Plus, to make it yourself, you have to aquire several other dyes and blend them.
Aloren
what are the other colors needed to make the black?
Is there a limited color depth on each dye, or could I use a black dye to make a red darker?

Uh, black dye is black dye.
I don't think the game uses actual color palettes when mixing dyes. Nobody knows for sure what sort of formula is involved yet I don't think.

Charles Ensign posted a color chart showing how 2 dyes would mix together. I believe he had even tested them all.
I don't think you can mix non-black dye together and get black.
Yes you can mix red and black to make a darker red.

Black is just a popular color. Always has been. And yeah...it's seen as a 'cool' or 'rebellious' color, much of the time.
I personally refuse to pay 3000+ for a single black dye (trader).
And I also, personally, have yet to ever have a black dye 'drop'. Purple & orange seems to be the most common dye drop, for me. *mutters about having 12 purple and orange in storage*

Yeah, black dye is worth so much because it:
1) Has super-high demand.
2) Is really freaking rare.
Either alone would make the price high, but when both combine, badness ensues.

So do we know it is rare? I know that my dye drops are odd, I had no black or silver for ages, but I got 4 silvers in a night (3-4 hours of play). Up to 5 silver and 2 black at this point, but I am wondering if other people have the reverse, too many black drops and not enough of yellow or something.
TopGun
Wait, when I use black dye on my PvP char creation, I DO NOT get black armor, I get the armor's standard color. Black dye is seriously black? I thought it was just a reversion to an origional color...
Aloren
I have never had a single black drop, but i've seen at least 5 of every other color drop in my time on the game.
I'm gonna have to take the dark red for a test run at some point

I seem to get a ton of silver as well, I think I have 12 or so in storage. Have never seen a black dye drop. I finally got a dragon sword to drop for me the other night, off of a Jade Scarab of all things. Weird thing is, it is blue, max damage, but nothing else special about it.

I sold the black for 1500 each, and one superior for 3000. The guy who bought the superior was almost in tears.
I'm keeping the silver, though. Got plans for it.

I've got 2 black dies sitting in storage that I got in my first 10 hours of play. I haven't gotten another one since.
I may just sell them once the price hits 6k :-)

I got a black dye about two days into the game. Thought it was cool and used it on my newbie armor...ten minutes later, my guildie told me how much it was worth

I was wondering is it smarter to trade the black dye for another item or to sell to a dye trader?
C-Tzar
I've gotten as many black dyes as any other color. Seems to just be random, but more people want black than anything else. I like black, and might like black on my armor, but not only can I not justify paying for it, I can't justify NOT selling the black dyes I find since poeple are willing to pay so much for them.

If you don't care about cash ('cause you already have everything in the game you want), then just sell it to the dye trader. There's a few people who do this, and that's why the dye trader has them. But, most people trade to other players.

Black dye is significantly more rare than the other dyes.
Dyes don't mix like pigments but like lights. Basically a mixed dye shines multiple lights on your armor, with reds coming before greens coming before blues. Silver and black brighten and darken the overall effect.
There are some real oddball combinations in there - my favorite is green plus purple, which actually dyes your armor something relatively close to its 'natural' color. If you have cash to burn and multiple characters I'd suggest trying it - it's a lime green on a Necromancer, a dark red on the Ranger, sea green on a Mesmer, light blue on a Warrior.
But you're going to see some variation in dye from class to class, so no chart is going to be perfect (again, due to base colorations), so just mess with mixing and find something you like. Personally I'm using Green + Blue + Black for a rich, dark green on my Elementalist, and Orange + Black + Black for a brown on my Monk.
Peace,
