Odd that you haven't heard the name Knights Templar before. It's a pretty common name that spans a lot of years and a lot of different game genres. For obvious reasons I used to keep track of every clan/guild that used "Knights Templar" in the name and at one point had the weblinks to almost a dozen of them in different games.

Ahh. 
Knights Templar are a tenacious breed. From MUDs to FPS's, to RTS's, to RPG's the name has been around a while. As luck would have it most of the established KT clans/guilds tend to have a strong focus in community which I am happy to see.
I like to think that our KT organization was the first to see real internet competition, but I'm willing to bet that some text based MUD has us beat by a few years.
