I read that when you get to level 20, something called ascention happens to you.
Is this just a fancy name for reaching the level cap or does something interesting actually happen?

Ascention will unlock certain things for your characters as well, such as the ability to change secondary professions. There might be some other things involved in Ascention as well, but seeing as the NDA is how it is, you'll have to wait until release to find out what all is involved.

Ascension is just a fancy name for "max level". What happens when you hit 20, besides not being able to get to 21, no one knows at this point. Changing secondary professions after hitting ascension was mentioned in a FSF
