I don't know if you guys are understanding.
He wants to look AT his character, while his character is moving.
Not just from behind, but all around.
Z will only flip back and forth from front to back.
The only suggestion I heard that might work is press on the ground far away and try swivelling the camera then.

I just tested it out. If you go into Options, then Control Setup, you will see an action named Free Camera.
I assigned it to my End key, hit autorun, and was able to hold the key while I held the right mouse button and could move the camera all over.
However, you can't control run direction while doing it. So you might just run into a wall or something if you're trying to escape a mob. I suppose if you're fast you could release the assigned key and change directions, providing you released with the camera behind you again.
Anyhow, test it out.
I want to point out that I have disabled mouse walking. Using a feature like the one above might be easier with mouse walking on.

you can hit R to autorun or you can follow someone else, then you're able to look around all you want and it won't change which way your character runs.
