>_> I THINK me might mean metatag info for search engines and what not? Some keywords are blocked by schools to prevent content from loading.

If you can get access to the command prompt from your school's computer's, you can bypass the block by entering an IP rather than the URL. I forgot exactly what you type though. it's something like

Ping [enter]

Ping website'sURL [enter]

and then it gives you a number which you enter... but i've forgotten it. it stopped working at my school when they blocked us from the prompt and blocked IPs as well.

Well, my first suggestion would be that, if you're in class, you should actually attempt to listen to what the teacher is talking about, even if you aren't interested in the class. You might just be surprised and learn something useful.

Besides that, I would hope that you're not that hopelessly addicted to reading this site that you need to look at it during school. Some of the people who created Guru may be flattered by the gesture, but if the school is really serious about not allowing you to access certain sites, I've found it's best to leave it alone. Bad things have happened to people at my school who have tried to bypass filters, and I consider my school to be lax in most enforcement of policy, with the exception of the dress code (we have a freakin' skirt stick for crying out loud).

Most schools are released at 3ish, that means you have at least a good 6 hours or more of time to read/respond to the forums. I'm not flaming, just saying that school should hopefully be taking priority over GWG/Guild Wars.

takes no time at all
so wen were done, we go online
and for a class that uses mostly comps
my teacher, along with my classmates, are pretty computer illiterate
its very sad and pathetics when one says,"HEY EVERYBODY! COME SEE MY PRESENTATION THINGY I MADE IT MAKE DA NOISE OF A B U S OH MY GOD ITS SO KOOl!!!!!!!!!! AAAUUUGGGGHHHH IM SO GOOD AT THIS!! LOOK ILL MAKE IT CLAP AFTER THE BUS CRASH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH SO FREAKING FUNNy AAHHA!!!!!"
and before you comment, yes a few people say that
one said that exact thing too lol
i was aboutto jump up and punch him square in the face for being so stupid
he says some VERY dumb comments and its hard to tell if hes serious or not
(very small head = low iq?)
but then in my torment everyone was amused at him saying WOW HOW U DO DAT!!!!
YO DAT IS SO KOOL
i need to escape after my work and this site is very relaxing
my teacher knows i do this
lol he watches his screen religiously
i guess since all comps are connected he can watch screens
but i know he watches mine
and he said nothing of it yet lol
maybe he realises that my iq isn't like theirs(comparable to a moose or a stapler)
mine is 147.5 last time i checked
but i used a little at a time :}>
but i would really like to see this site if possible

lol hey man! don't insult da moose like that!

But yeah, I can completely understand where you are coming from, they really need to work on making the courses in schools a trifle more...interesting. There's no motivation to do the actual work when its been stupefied for the lowest common denominator in the class.

A little off topic, but it's always been my theory that you should never have to take a class that has nothing to do with your choice of study(example: a business major shouldn't have to take a science course). I should clarify that I'm refering to higher education, I recall way in my past when researching universities while attending a community college I found this one in upstate New York that only made you take courses in your chosen major. However, being the genius that I was back then I didn't bother to write the information down, and for the life of me I could never remember it.

Umm ... there is no universal categorization plan. If someone deemed us as a games site, it was their perogative, not ours.

Furthermore, lets try to type more than 4 words on a line before going for that crackwhip return key.

And I 100% categorically disagree Zaklex. If you confine yourself to only one region of study you are cutting yourself short. Variety is the spice of life

But don't get me wrong; with only about one month left until I take my AP Exams, already having taken my Wisconsin Placement Tests (which were a joke), beening accepted to my college of choice since last October I believe, and just getting lazy, the thought has seriously crossed my mind on multiple occasions as of late.

However, since I'm the last of three children, and my brother set a bad precedent (he's the black sheep of our nuclear family), I'm kind of looked upon to be at least somewhat more well-behaved than he has been. Granted, I'm no angel, but I'm good enough where if I do slip up, I can get away with it, and I can use my good standing combined with my being the youngest child to get my parents to let me do pretty much anything I want, within limits of course. But I've babbled long enough, and I've been off-topic anyway...

And as Inde said, there isn't a universal system to categorize websites. From my understanding, there are certain companies whose whole purpose is to look at the web pages on the web and classify and organize them into their respective genres so they're more easily accessible when searching/browsing/etc. Something like that at least, I knew at some point.

I used to help run the largest high school in the Southeast (as a student). There are indeed a few ways to get around the filter. If you can get to the run command, which I doubt, try the solution that the first poster suggested. Depending on which OS you guys are using, if you can get to the run command type in either "cmd" or "command". Once that pops up type in "ping guildwarsguru.com". It will say "Pinging guildwarsguru.com [IP HERE xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]. Then you can close that, go back to the run command, and type http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. This should get around the block that they have.

In my experience, the easiest ways to get around the type of filter you are talking are as follows:

1) Go to Google and try to look up sub-pages of the Guild Wars Guru site. Try "Guild Wars Guru Forum" or "Guild Wars Guru Skill list". Sometimes by doing this the filter doesn't have a clue that it should be blocking the site.

2) Go to www.guildwars.com. Let it load, then redirect you to the "This page is filtered" screen. Then, hit back on your web browser. What this should do is take you back to guildwars.com, and then redirect you to the "This page is filtered" screen again. If you keep doing this at a fast pace, you will overload the filter and it will let you through.

3) If all else fails, you can try connecting to a proxy and then browsing the web, the problem with this is that almost all proxies are blocked by the school. You could also try setting up your home computer as a VPN and connecting to it from school. If you need help with this you can make another post about it here, but I have very limited knowledg of proxies and VPNs, and Google would probably be a better person to ask than me.

Keep in mind that at my school, atleast, the filters were handled by the county and not the systems administrator at your school. You will not be able to go to your admin and ask him to unblock the site because he will not be able to do it.

as stated earlier, you will not be able to access this site by IP as we are using a virtual hosting service. So the IP is attempting to access the virtual hosting server and not us.

I'm not sure how else you would bypass the filter and as I am a proponent of actually learning while you're in school (and based on some of the english in some of the posts I've seen, we could use some more of this) I wouldn't tell you how even if I knew.

Once upon a time..

Sorry, but being a strong supporter of education in general.. I would go along with the majority and just suggest that you pay attention to class, instead. And yes, I know boring lectures. I sit through at least 15 hours of them each week.

As for the class not relating to whatever you're trying to do, you might still actually learn something valuable. Sure, the professor/teacher might not be good at technology, but he is probably knowledgeable in the field that he is teaching, so I wouldn't disregard him simply on the basis of his (lack of) technological prowess.

Sure, you can spend hours and hours trying to outsmart the school filter, but why not spend those hours bettering yourself by increasing your knowledge. Ignorance is NOT bliss, and it's definitely not bliss to everyone around you, either.

You could always go the extra step and decide that, "Hey, the rest of my class are a bunch of putzes. I want to get ahead and see if I can make some really cool things while I'm waiting for others to catch up!" I took Introduction to Programming last year (yes, it's a pretty weak class, but I have an interest in knowing more about programming/computers in general), and most of my class would easily be considered dullards. So instead of just sitting around and waiting for the teacher to assign something to me, I would run through Visual Basic and try to make insane programs on my own, trying to build off of the general knowledge that I already knew and see if I could figure out even more without his help. The pursuit of knowledge is the noblest of all pursuits, especially when it is driven by yourself.

But what do I know? I'm only a teenager

I agree with you, sorry others, but for those of us still in education after we accomplish a task we like to reward ourselves? In my high school, it was a joke, I'd finish the work assigned and do what I wanted to do afterwards. William your situation is unique in that you "chose" to take this class and go the extra mile because you were interested. High school isn't privvy to the abundance of classes/teachers a higher education would be, as you would know if you are a teenager... and I'm guessing in college like myself. I agree that the acquirement of knowledge is the highest of all endeavors, but you don't seriously mean all the time? If so, what are you doing on these forums lol.... and yes it is a knowledge of sorts but I doubt most people would see it in an educational sense.

And this is where we lock the topic.

We have set no categorization, and therefore can do nothing about it.

Discussion on the merits of paying attention or not can be continued in OT.
