The good news is you don't have to make a perminent decision. Your attribute refund points fill back up to 24/24 every 6,000 or so experience. Depending on what group I'm in and what I'm fighitng I go between sword and axe mostly. I've tried all sorts of stuff with hammer and I just can't seem to do more damage with it than I do with sword or axe. If crude swing for hammer wasn't so broken and I could actually build adrenaline the story might be different.
I find axe better when I'm going to fight a ton of enemies as I can use my energy for Cyclone Axe and then open up enough adrenaline based skills to keep me busy whereas most of the good sword attacks are also energy based meaning I have to pick between Flourish or Hundred Blades.

I used axe for a long time. It was alright but the skills aren't nearly as effective as a sword. I'm doing 2x the damage with a sword and the right skills. Final Thrust is a must have imo. I've done over 120 dmg in a hit against level 20+ mobs with final thrust and conjure lightning. Go sword, get one with max dmg and + dmg when health over 50%. Frenzy is a must in a build as well.

Swords have a higher damage/sec rate than axes do.
Max dmg swd: 15-22. That means that you'll be hitting for at least 15 everytime and will average 17-18 (excluding armor effects for the sake of argument.) On the other hand a max dmg axe is 6-28 which means that while your average hit will still be ~17, your minimum hits will be very low in comparison to the sword.
There is one caveat though, swords are best against oponents that bleed, axes are good against everything. U decide what's best for you.

You would go Sword because of the Dragon sword with the fiery hilt which yo u can get fairly easy on drake runs. Then you can add two more modifers. There are possible other sswords patched in since release that have other ele hilts - but I wouldnt know.
So fiery Dragon Sword sword would be a good way to go with a conjure flame.

I'm a Warrior/Elementalist, and i like AXe, though i'm sure once i get to max damage it would be better for me to have a sword. Cylone Axe is a great skill against groups of mobs. You build adrinalying wicked fast, and Axe Skills add good damage for just burning adreniline.
I use A firey Axe, with conjure flame, charge a healer or a caster a head of the my party, use Lava Font, then open up with Cylcone Axe. By the time i have done all this i have a small horde of like 6 baddies on me, all taking AOE damage. Then i just burn Execution Axe, or Penetrating blow into the most dangerous one ... and usually by the time the dust has settled their down.
In PVP i would be inclined to think sword is better, but Axe has its strengths for an AOE warrior/Elementalist build.
Thats my noobish opinion anyways.

Currently I use axe simply because of cleave. The capabilities of spamming cleave are just simply amazing. I used to use swords and then i switched to axe and i've stayed axe. Axe's are just stable all around and usually get the job done very well, swords are so-so but not really build up for major damage spamming. Gash relies on sevre artery and if the opponent doesn't bleed, then two of your skills just went out. If you try to finish the combo with final thrust you'll need to waste all your adreniline just to do an extra 30ish damage, it works out better if their health is under 50%, but then how often will you spam an 8 adrenline skill when their HP is below 50? (Probably once before either you or the person/creature is dead). Using cleave (Only 4 adreniline) you can deal about +22 dmg with 12 axe mastery constantly. Combined with dismember and the weakness causing axe attack, it allows a constant +dmg blow. Deep wound can be effected on anything and doesn't require a bleeding target. If you combine with "for great justice" you'll be spamming +10 dmg/+22 dmg constantly since they don't drain all adreniline afer you run out. the end result is still up to you though, just my two cents.

While it does depend on how you paly your W/E, most W/Es should either use hammer or a sword. Hammer W/Es use the knockdown+aftershock combo (really nasty if you have earthshaker). Sowrd W/Es use conjure element then flurry and hundred blades to make the most of the bonus damage from conjure.
But overall, axes do better against targets that run. The higher max damage means more deadly criticals. Axe skills also do more damage on average than sword skills (sword skills will cause a secondary effect, most axe skills will cause a secondary effect AND bonus damage).

In PVP, axe will outdamage a sword every time. The only thing a sword has is a little more utility. You can't say that average damage is roughly the same, because the criticals for axe are overwhelmingly better. If my numbers are correct (although they're old), a critical does 141% of the max damage, meaning an axe critical is much, much better than a sword. Sword moves are not bad, but have a lot more utility than axe moves. Eviscerate or Cleave are fantastic moves, especially compared to something like Hundred Blades, which is decent, but never comes close to anything the axe can dish out.

Err critical is max dmg x 2. Running targets always suffer criticals when running.
It is true that axes alone are better damage in the end (as long as you're actually using the skills) but with a W/E conjure build, a sword may be a better choice.

You can't add a hilt to a Dragon Sword.
Choose your weapon based on what skills work best for your build. I'm a Melee ranger/warrior and since I have expertise, I use energy attacks. There are better sword energy attacks than axe ones, so I use swords

Dragon sword comes with the fiery hilt. You cant mod that anymore. For pvp, axes overshadow swords by a longshot. The 7 charge eviscerate saves a skill tab and does around 150 damage with deep wound. Penetrating blow+cleave provide excellent dot, and distracting chop is an awsome disrupter. taking conjures or judge's insight/strength of honor into thought, swords would be better for all the buffs in conjunction with HB.

W/E y would u use sword or axe.....hammer

I don't think running targets always suffer criticals. I swear it was like that a while ago (maybe in betas), but now I believe it's not an automatic critical when running. Just a set amount of added damage, maybe?
