1 vs 1 Arena good or bad?

1. Good idea, I'm all for it.
2. Bad idea, I like having someone to blame when I lose.
Just tossing out an idea, I know the game called GuildWars, but wouldn't it be nice to have a small 1vs1 arena or Free For All last man standing type for those of us loners that don't like to rely on others to win battle? It would also be kinda nifty to see guild leader calling out other guild leader into 1vs1 fight see who's the boss w/o the helps from their guildmates. Discuss.

I really think this kind of Arena will be impossible to balance... I can just see warriors beating the crap out of elementalists....
Plus it would be boring unless other people could watch you fight.
I'd say I'd more like the idea of a arena where you fight wave after wave of increasingly powerful mobs... kind of like lvl 1-10 or 1-50 or 1-100 depending on what the leader selects.
It would reward skill points, cash and items as prizes

And warriors would get their buttoxes whooped by Rangers who know a thing or two. I for one would just use pin down, hunter's shot and pepper him from a distance. If it's a warrior monk, I'd use distracting shot whenever the warrior attempts to heal himself. Then, I'd repeat the process, healing myself with my monk abilities.

Bad.Basicly those pure protection/healing/divine favor monks would win by killing the opponent with Boredom.

Would you like the opinion of someone who had tried it?
It's pointless. I new it would be but I decided to give it a go anyway, just to prove a point.
8 of us went to an empty arena in the international district. That puts us into two teams of 4. Once there we pair off and try 1vs1. The results were completely predictable. We could tell who would win before the fight even started. This game is very much rock, paper,Scissors. Build 1 can easily beat build 2 but will be vulnerable to build 3. Any fights that were not completely lopsided would last forever since the participants could heal themselves faster than thier opponent could damage them.
I think anyone with an understanding of the games mechanics would know these things already. The only value of a 1vs1 arena would be so guild members could try out specific counters and such. Anything else would be pointless.

I think a 1 vs. 1 system would be awesome. But not necessarily in the same way that the regular arenas are fought. I think that it should work kind of like the trade system. Like you would click on someone, and you could click a button that said something like "duel". Then, the other person would get a pop-up box notifying them that someone wants to duel them. They could either accept or decline, just like in trading. This would allow for more balance, and you'd get to pick who you fight. I'd absolutely love to duel my friends, but with the current system, I can't.

1 vs 1 is doable in GW. But I would like it to actually be 8 vs 8, but with only one human player + 7 henchmen in each team. That way 1 vs 1 battle can be more balanced and in GW's spirit.

Even though I know it wouldn't mean jack, and even though I know it goes against the whole idea of a team game, I would like to see a mano-a-mano option. If for no other reason than to take idiots up on their claims that they are super-1337 unkillable uber-characters.

When you tried out 1v1, were they just pvp builds that you were using or did you actually go in there with your skill bar set for 1v1's?
I dunno really, I think it'd be nice to have a way of testing out an anti-such and such build without trying to find one in an arena.
You might get some builds that just completly destroy one other type of character, but I think quite alot of people would end up rounding their characters out a bit more.
Oh and I like the idea just because I think rangers could do quite well, lol.
There's no reason they can't make a small arena for things like this, maybe an area where 1-8 people can enter as a group but they can damage each other, like a free for all. Then you could make up any different combinations of pvp that you like.
[Edit]Actually I'll extend that and suggest that maybe it should be available in the guild area, as well as being able to summon computer controlled opponants of various proffessions and types. A sort of guild training area maybe.

Bad Idea! I hope people stop whining about a 1vs 1 Arena.
Add a training yard for guilds instead. So u can test everything without the disadvantages of 1vs1.

Not to mention it would require a totaly different way of playing... so characters could have their favorite 1v1 character... their favorite 4v4 build... and their favorite guild vs guild or 8 play team build...

Thanks for input folks, it's good to see what other people think about the idea. I know it goes against the whole concept of GuildWars, but then again if the dev team was nice enough to throw one in, it wouldn't mean you have to participate in it, if you prefer team play. I really don't see how this would hurt the community I see it as more pvp options to choose from. I love the idea of duel option mentioned by Mr.Niceguy that sounds like it would work out quite well, I also think that FFA (free for all) type battle would be awesome throw 8 players into an arena, have them duke it out, and see who would be the last man standing. Personally I like this concept I think it would give players a chance to stand up for their characters instead of hiding behind a guild tag. Well not like AN will actually read this thread, but hey one can hope right? Considered how AN went out off their way nerfing/making the game much easier after people whined, it can't be so hard for them to make this happen lol.

I can see a pure 1v1 arena being a huge problem, but what I would propose is a kind of free-for-all arena. take about 16 people at most. Maybe let it be an in guild kind of thing. That way you could test out templates and see how things worked with responses from people you know. At the moment, I have no way to duel with my guildies to test templates out or to test teams.

They only problem is probably, that it's impossible to balance this as a whole. No, I don't think that one class will rule them all, just that it would be impossible to have a built that survives more than a couple of rounds (except everyone is using standard skills). If ppl fail in 1vs1, they're more likely to complain about balanced - unbalanced, which would lead to alot of whining. Now whining wouldn't bother me, if those that complain the most wouldn't get heard in the end (at least in almost every other game I've played). If you see someone better than you - you call them unbalanced until the devs decide to nerf them. Then you're king of the hill for a few weeks, until you yourself get hit by the nerf-bat, because other kept calling you unbalanced. And this game continues until every single class is ruined (or, when the devs are witty, starts over again, because at one point everything is as it was when the game was released).
Eh, other than those minor objections, I'd really love to see a 1vs1 arena. Could be alot of fun to try to find builds that can stand their own against various other builds.

As mentioned above, a 1v1 Arena is against the whole design concept of GW. However, I do see merits in a 1v1 Arena: it can stop people complaining. If people wanna do 1v1, let them be, most of us who compete in Tombs / GvG know true skill comes with teamwork and not personal uber-leet character build.
As for using a 1v1 arena to try out builds....there wouldn't be that much benfit from it. Most of the time in PvP, you are creating a build to complement the rest of your team. So that your build can be excellent in one respect, but very bad in another. For example, you know for sure that an anti-caster mesmer or ranger can disrupt enemy monks very well, but they may not necessarily have the damage power to actually kill one. In a 1v1 PvP, neither of them can win the match because of low damage potential. But in team games, a team would have a really good anti-caster and a really good damage dealer...it is this combination that ensures victory.
