Small Suggestion - Naming our Weapons

I believe that once you have Ascended, you should be able to name your weapon.

I believe this option would help with the storyline/environment immersion Guild Wars lacks and the absence of unique weapons due to the helpful, but bland, suffix/prefix system.

I added the "once you have Ascended" part for the reason that by this time you know what Forked Swords look like and what "Zealous" means. This would prevent scamming in earlier areas [especially Pretty Ascalon].

I would place such an option under the "Customize" tab of the weapons dude.

Please post approval, comments, or criticism below.

Perhaps if you name a weapon, it's name cannot be changed by another player if you trade it away.

That, or make it so you can only name weapons that have been customized for you. This solves the scamming part.

Neat idea, and no real negatives, but, and don't take this personally, I'd rather the devs focus on something else, gameplay mechanics, or really obvious bugs.

I love it. It reminds me of how Bilbo and Frodo's sword in LOTR was named Sting. And Gandolf's sword, Glamdring.

It also fits the need for more customization. They could make it a secondary description and part of the customization process. You only customize your weapons once, right? <G>

Ooo... That would be really awesome no negatives there... also if you could get engravings in your sheilds...

Ie: get a guild emblem engraved in your sheild=personalization

I suggested this because it would be relatively easy to implement compared to much of the stuff other threads are trying to get accomplished.

This would be a simple way to improve player satisfacion without the exertion of too much work or effort on ANet's part.

I'm not a developer, but I can't count how many times professional game devs have responded to this the same way.

We have no idea how much effort it would require. We didn't code the game, we're not familiar with the engine, often what seems to us like a simple modification could require loads of work, or be simply impossible to implement. As gamers we should never make the mistake of assuming a fix would be easy to code.

So if you want to name your weapons, fine... but don't cite "it would be easy" as your biggest reason. Personally, I agree with Minwanabi that I'd prefer attention go to something more core, rather than peripherals like this.

I love this idea.

Maybe it should only work on RARE weapons that are customized. Naming convention works the same as character names where you cannot have violations. The name should stick with the weapon until it has been destroyed.

I wonder, how many ppl would call their sword "excalibur"? Nevertheless a really cool idea.

I apologize if it strikes you as a brash statement, but I am just thinking as a layman.

I made this assumption from the naming of pets currently present in Guild Wars. Pet naming does not strike me as something that was difficult to implement. It's some text that is displayed whenever your pet is present, and not much more different than Cynn/Devona/Menhlo calling you by your character's name during missions/quests.

With this hypothesis, I guessed that the naming of weapons would not be much more difficult. A simple text box and "Accept" button in the "Customization" tab of the Weapons crafter does not seem, to me, a hard thing to do.

Either way, I stand by my statement.

Although I don't support obscenity, I see no reason why there should be a limit to what you can name your weapon. There is no way they can see your Twin Hammer named "BMF" [expanded] without you showing them.

I personally enjoy going back to Ascalon and helping noobs out by giving them gear and escorting them to Piken Square. I find appealing the idea that I would be able to give someone a decent low-req sword named "Salvation" on the promise he gives it to someone else in need once a replacement is found. However, if it turns out that I can only name swords that I have customized, it would make this impossible.

I will edit my first post, considering what I wrote in the last paragraph.

I agree, the fun of naming your weapons is perhaps it goes into circulation.

Like someday you will see someone saying "WTS My First Love, max damage Chaos Axe!" Then you can say "I found and named that axe"

yes, really good idea and that circulation thingy. Wouldnt it be great that your max dmg fellblade with +30 health and some other bonus would get fame as you do? Oh yeah, id like it.

But then again, if theres no any limitation on those names it would be like that 1000 excalibur's, masamune's and zantetsuken's would be spreading across the game and that wouldnt be fun But if there would be limit so that one name could only be used on one weapon, it would be a slight problem. But i really like the idea, game developers should really think about it and how to work it out.

Even though it wouldnt be raising the gameplay, so what? Its like Dwarven Ale, good item for rping on game. It would make your sword, axe or bow known amongst people, and that would be great. Go and do this developers please :P
