Some Noob questions

Hey guys,

I'm currently playing WOW and the fact that battlegrounds still isn't out is making me consider cancelling my account. I've been reading about guild wars and I had some questions.

1. I read in the FAQ that there are only 20 levels and that leveling isn't a grind...how much play time does it take to get to lvl 20 then? Am I looking at a month of playing or like a week?

2. Also, I read that there was no real "transportation" in the game...so how to do you go from city to city?

3. How do you go about getting quests? And are there noob zones for ppl to lvl up? Are the noob zones friendly to solo'ers or are you expected to go as a party?

4. Is there a max number of ppl in a group/party?

5. How does the economy work in the game? Can you buy/sell anything you pick up? Is there a random rolling system to decide who gets loot?

Thanks =D

a week or so could get you to level 20

then the game starts

you teleport to any place you have reached on foot

no zones except the intro tut area but it is so big most people thought it was the game

big shock when they went through the academy at level 3-? and found out what they had been playing was a spot on the map

depends on level 2-8 at later levels

no camping
no pkers
no loot steling

no random encounters except cities camps outposts

no mining crafting logging etc

mostly salvage things into basic parts

bow may give wood, bone etc

armor may give rune steel etc

items are assigned by random drop to a person no first grab first get

edit

there are free henchmen (npc) if you cant grab or dont want a party

i solo only the missions and explorable areas

It takes 40-60 hours of play time for an average player to reach level 20 if they're trying for it. You can probably do it in less if you try hard, or more if you spend time idling/trading/exploring, etc.

You can open up the world map by clicking a button in the lower-right corner or by pressing 'M'. All of the locations you've been with your character are shown on the map, and you can click on one to instantly travel to that location. If you're trying to get someplace you've never been, you'll have to get there either via completing missions or travelling through Exploration Areas. Once you've been there once, it's opened up and you can return via the map at whim.

As you go around, people with quests to give you have a green exclamation point over their heads. You talk to them(by clicking on them), and go through a dialogue. One of the quests will also take you to the first "mission", which are longer quests involving the storyline. The first area you're in when you create a character is kinda a "noob zone"- there's lots of easy enemies, little quests, and most things won't attack you unless you irritate them. It's a good environment to learn the game, and is very condusive to soloing(max 2 people in a group in those zones, and I prefer to solo them anyhow). You can feasibly get to about level 6 or possibly 7 in presearing Ascalon, but the experience really starts dropping off after about 5. To get out of the area, just enter the academy in town, and you'll go through some cinematics and be in the main portion of the game.

Yes, though it changes depending on where you are at in the game. In the early areas, you have a max of 2 people, though only for a couple hours while you learn the ropes and explore the area. Once you get to seared Ascalon, parties are limited to 4 characters, and once you reach the shiverpeaks it goes up to 6. There's also parties of 8 allowed in PvP matches, so I would assume that some missions might allow 8 players in a group as well.

Pretty much anything that drops can be sold or salvaged. You can buy salvage kits in towns and outposts which you can use to break drops down into their components- like getting wood planks from a bow, or iron from a hammer. You can then take these salvage materials to town, and have an NPC craft you new armor and weapons. Likewise, you can sell looted items or crafting materials for gold, and you can use weapons and other gear that you find. There's a random system in place for drops, which seems to work fairly good- I've never had any problems with it(besides for streaks of bad luck).

i was reading about battlegrounds, and it looks like a sad attempt at copying GW. they also had a PvP thing that was see who kills 1,001 (not an exageration, you really have to kill 1,001) monsters first... how is this PvP and seriosuly how is killing the same monster 1,001 times competative?

The max level is where the real game begins

Guild Wars IS all about killing stuff.PvE.PvP.There are tons of quests.Lots of missions.100s if not 1000s of items.Just because you max out at level 20 does not mean you have reached your full potential.Like everyone says the real fun begins at level 20.

What do you do when you graduate from High School? It only has 12 "levels".
Life isn't over, in fact most people think it hasn't even begun yet.

The low max lvl puts greater emphasis on interacting with more people at once and grouping with them. When you have characters from lvls 1-60+ that take months or years to get that high, you aren't allowing a good freedom of interaction between the characters. It is just a race and those that put in the most time will reap the benefits first. But when you set it to a max of lvl 20 that can be obtained in a few weeks or days, depending on how much you play, you are allowing for a higher amount of people around the same lvl earlier and longer to enjoy the game together, making it a lot easier to get groups for PvE and PvP.

ranger/monk was recommended as one of the best builds to survive solo/or solo with henchmen
