mesmer/monk?
sk33zl0w
I played the GW preview a long time ago and have been playing WoW since then. I had a lvl 60 warlock but noticed GW was coming soon and since i was bored of WoW so i quit and am looking for something here. While reading about the classes i liked the idea of a mesmer and that will be my primary but i am unsure about the secondary. I was thinking monk because i would be able to heal when i get low on hp. In WoW groups where always looking for a priest because a healer is always needed and there are not always many of them. If i took monk as 2nd class i am thinking it may be a bit easier to get a group as well. I am open to something like an elementalist secondary also to shell out DD. The main thing i want to do as a mesmer is to shut down the enemy healer or casters. Would i be able to do this with monk or should i choose another secondary. I haven't seen any mesmer/monk builds though i have seen some anti healer/casster builds. Can anyone link some builds or give me some suggestions on better secondary classes for my goals?

that is a good build for what you want...
keep inmind though, that they are currently working on a way so that you can switch your secondary class, all the details arnt worked out yet, but they want to make it so that you could progress your character, and at somepoint switch your secondary class and you can get skills for it, and at any time you can swtch back to your old secondary class and still have all the skills youve earned for it.
also the build in that link, the monk is used for dealing more dmg, but can easily be made to heal yourself because of the attribute refund system, when you earn experience you get refund points, and you can move the points you invested in something into another area, so basically all the char builds are extremely flexible and well balenced, cant go wrong.

A mesmer monk should work fine for what your trying to do, keep in mind its a handfull because you have to not only concentrate on taking out the enemy monk but also to heal your team if you want to do that. One of the major advantages of mesmers is the attribute "Fast Casting" with each point your casting time is reduced So you can spam low energy healing spells extremely fast. Just try things out and have fun
Get a feel for the classes and such. I recently became a warrior so i could learn how to take them out efficiently, I actually started to like it.. (and i learned why warriors run ahead :P) So you never know what your going to play.

i looked at the build and in general i liked it but i came up with this which is more of an altered version of that build
migraine-For 6-25 seconds, target foe suffers health degeneration of 1-3, and takes 100% longer to cast spells.
this will be great to slow down enemy monk heals and once there gone it will PWN mages
conjure phantasm-For 2-12 seconds, target foe experiences health degeneration of 5.
I need to do a bit of damage though if i find something better this can go
Power Leak-If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and your target loses 10-22 Energy.
interrupt
Power Spike-If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and target foe takes 20-86 damage.
interrupt
Leech Signet- Interrupt target foe's action. If that action was a spell, you gain 3-13 Energy.
interrupt and this takes no mana so i gain mana
Power Drain- If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and you gain 1-25 Energy.
you guessed it................interrupt
Scourge Healing-For 30 seconds, every time target foe is healed, the healer takes 15-67 Holy damage.
this way if the monk tries to heal himself a good deal of the heal is wasted and if another healer is low on health it may make them think twice
For the 8th slot i am not sure what to pick mabey backfire where for 10 seconds when the caster uses a spell they take 35-119 d.
I could also use a spell to slow the target by 50% or ether feast
I only have 1 monk spell in here atm so i could put in a healing spell or the signet ring that will rez an allie i am just not sure so a suggestion would help here.
Since i have never played with a mesmer primary before i am just looking at spells i see on the site and so some things may actually not work. I am not sure if i need al thsoe interupts because 4 sounds like a lot to me although i think i could use this against any caster. I probabley made some bad choices in here so could someone give me some suggestions?

First, your attribute points are already distributed over four attributes with this build, so the only healing spell you could use without spreading yourself too thin is Ether Feast in Inspiration magic, which may come in handy if you need it.
Leech Signet has a recharge of 45 seconds, which makes it less valuable than your other interrupts. May work in your build, but could probably do with something else. If you keep it, I say get rid of Power Leak so the caster has energy for you to drain. Four interrupts is a lot.
For some nice damage, Energy Burn would come in handy. If you want to keep a heavy interrupt build, I suggest not using Backfire. Some casters do cast through it, and it does come in handy, but with your interrupts taking up a lot of space it may be better not to use it. You have Scourge Healing, which I think will help out more since you will be able to take out the monks quicker. Shame might be another spell to help limit the monks' power.
Mesmer isn't my usual choice for preference, but just trying to offer some suggestions from my own experience and knowledge of my friends/guildies.

Actually, I think backfire is good for almost any anticaster build with domination. It allows you to mess with multiple targets at once, you just have to make sure you use the right skills in your list on the right people. If you backfire one healer, then you can pretty much count him out for 10 seconds (unless someone removes it), and can concentrate your interupting power on others.
About having that extra damage via conjure phantasm, since your in a team with 7 other players, and as a mesmer your going to be the team's primary interupter, it would be best if you focused more on the disruptive element of your build, since there are plenty of other charecters on your team meant for damage. So IMO you should drop phantasm.
Also, one of the most valubal aspects of being a monk is the ability to resurect fallen party members, so I think that would be a perfect spell for your final slot.
And also about the self heal, once again your in a team of 7 other people, and no good team enters a battle without a precious healer, so if you become the called target, there will be a healer or two who can cover you. Ether feast is best in a build more devoted to energy sapping.

I agree here and i think i will switch it with leech signet because as kha said 4 interupts is a little much and i dont think i really need it. Backfire would help keep another caster/healer out for 10 seconds or they would take a good bit of D.
As for the last spell although i like ether feast i am thinking a monk heal would work better here but i don't want to put points into another monk line and am not sure which heal would be best.
I could switch phantasm with Power Block- If target foe is casting a spell, that spell is interrupted. The interrupted spell and all spells of that attribute are disabled for 3-13 seconds for that foe. I like this interupt because if i got a monk while they tried to heal they wouldn't be able to heal again for a bit. Because this is an elite skill i would have to switch Migraine with Arcane Conundrom-For 6-25 seconds, "spells" cast by target foe take twice as long to cast. It is only a bit worse than migraine because it has a bit longer recharge and no health degeneration.
Any thoughts on this

I think that is a great idea, but you may wat to keep an eye on your energy. Right now all you have for energy is power drain, which is good, but a mesmer is only going to have about 40-45 energy so you may wat to find another energy replenisher. My suggestions are channeling, energy drain (elete, so probably not if you are set on using Power block), or Energy Tap, or Inspiered Hex. Those last two are a bit weak but tap helps drain someone who has been power leaked.

Yep. I agree also, and I say go with Power Block and Energy Tap. If you had a weapon/foci that made your Inspiration skills recharge faster, Energy Tap will become more useful than Inspired Hex. So your build will look something like...?
Power Block
Energy Tap
Power Drain
Backfire
Arcane Conundrom
Power Leak
Power Spike
Scourge Healing (or Res? It would come in handy, and being monk secondary people kind of expect it.)

This is going to be more or less my build for GvG to shut down healers and casters. Since it will be GvG i will just point out that in no means can i be relied on for healing/rez to my guild. For PvE i think i will change this up and bring along a rez and heal as well as take out some interrupts because i don't see where i will need them for PvE. If i see the need to bring a rez along for PvP i can change it a bit.
EDIT would it be worth it to switch Power Leak with Blackout? This way they would have more mana to drain and if i ever need to i can shut them down for 6 seconds and then get the jump on them. I can see this working well when 1 or 2 of there members are almost dead i could stop them from healing without worrying about timing.
I am planning to have
Fast Casting 8
Illusion 8
Domination 10 +2 I am hoping to get some runes/items to raise atts.
Inspiration 8 +1
Smiting Prayers 7
