The Price of Deldrimor Steel
provoko
This thread is to figure out what the cost of an item like Deldrimor Steel should cost. I'll be focusing on the cost of acquiring the materials needed to craft Deldrimor Steel.
Things that I'll ignore is the time it takes to acquire the materials from salvaging. I can't find any threads or people that say whether Deldrimor Steel drops, and if it does, it most likely takes to long to get it as it does to acquire all the charcoal, iron, or dust, so this analysis will focus purely on buying/trading the materials and then crafting it.
I will also ignore the cost of crafting charcoal because you can easily trade for it or buy it from NPC material trader (when available).
*new price on page 2*
For starters, to make Deldrimor Steel from scratch can cost around 675 to 715 gold which includes the cost of Charcoal 160-200g, dust 75g (5 x 15g), iron 240g (24g x 10) plus base cost 200g. This price is the max which no one should sell over.
The actual worth is determined by what people would buy/sell each component at. This is what people would generally buy/sell at: Glittering dust 5-10g x 5, Iron 10-17g x 10, Charcoal 100g-200g x 1 + 200g = 425-620g. So Deldrimor steel would cost 425g minimum and 620g maximum to buy/craft.
There is of course the cost of time. The time it takes to bargain and pay for the materials from players or the time it takes to find the items does cost something. This figure is too hard to calculate or even impossible. But we know what its not, the cost will never be over the maximum amount to make Deldrimor Steel or less than the cost of the materials.
As of right now I'm pricing Deldrimor steel at:
Iron 170g = 17g x 10
Dust 30g = 6g x 5
Charcoal 125g
NPC craft cost 200g
Total Cost 525g
Recommended price to sell/buy at: 600-625g
*new price on page 2*
Anything below 530g or over 715g is a rip-off, the range of 600-625g is the most reasonable, it takes into account the cost of buying the materials and the time it takes to sell and craft them.
Costs are accurate as of June 5th, based on various buyers/sellers and NPC sell/buy prices.
This analysis is supposed to give you the basic idea of what an item should cost in the game. By next week or even by tomorrow the prices will most likely be different, but the concept is still the same: There’s a maximum cost to make an item like this that no one should pay over and there’s a minimum cost based on trading for the materials to craft which no one should pay below. The cost to sell to someone will be found in the middle.

I would like to add one quick note. Time is the one thing in this game (as well as real life) that we will NEVER get back. Gold, crafting materials, items, and skills are all replaceable. Time is not. Persanally, I find my average costs for an ingot of Deldrimor Steel to be about 625gp. If I am selling it, I charge 750gp per ingot, simply because of how long it takes. After all, I could spend the same amount of time killing mobs for XP, items, AND gold.
This is however, just my 2 cents.

So what you are saying is that if some nice person comes along and says hello, would you like to buy some deldrimor steel for 400g, I should say "no, the professor of economics at GWG said that paying below 530 is a rip-off?"
I'm not even going to elaborate.

cc.pyro, you are taking the post out of context. the poster is implying that by selling below the minimum you are ripping yourself off. Instead of being a [email protected], why don't you read the post again and work on those comprehension skills.
Very good post. I would also agree that the maximum "fair" value for selling, or willing to buy should be higher as time is valuable.

If you buy Deldrimor Steel off of someone for less than 530g you're riping them off. If someone is trying to sell it over 715g, they're trying to rip you off. This is all debatable, but now when people say "selling more than 500 is a scam", you know they're wrong.
Obviously if you're trying to buy it you're gonna want to pay the smallest amount, and if you do get it less than 530g, good for you. Visa versa, if you sell it more than 715g, good for you. But now that you have the facts, no one has to be clueless about these transactions or call each other scammers for selling it at 600 or 700.
Lord Bentam
Problem is where are the people selling? Prices dont go by amount to make but by demand ... if only one person is selling he controls the price .. if more people are selling then buying the prices plumet because they compete for the sale ..
I just made my own .. didnt want to spend time trying to find people

Yeah, except those prices you put down for iron, dust and charcoal are arguable. Iron goes for much less, and so does charcoal. Don't look at the price the NPCs sell materials for, it's always inflated.
And plus, for items like deldrimor steel that are only craftable and not drops, people can just go craft their own, so there isn't really any profit in farming for them and selling them to buyers.

Yea but for everyone else but mesmers and elematlists, you need 35-40 steel for 15k armor. To go out and craft on your own you'll need 350 iron, 35 charcoal, 175 dust on top of what you need. If you're a warrior you'll need 800 iron total. I'd rather find someone and buy it off of them 35 at a time.
Oh and the prices, thats how much I was able to get them today. Iron was being sold for 250 for 10 at the material trader for some strange reason so people were only selling at 16-17g each. Might be different right now. I'll update the prices soon.

Well this is a great post...now that i spent 15k for 15 deldrimore. Citadel was selling at 1k per ignot. I bought it and i dont see it going down anytime soon, unless the market crashes.(like orange dye)

I find the prices of the top armors ridiculous anyway. You need alot of ressources and then 75.000 gold extra.
Ppl that don't farm (like me) will never be able to buy such a armor.
On the one side anet kills all farming places, on the other side the top armor is so expansive that you need to farm.
I had never above 8.000 gold at once and my main char is at the last mission right now.

Deagol
The top armor is 7.5k gold, not 75k gold. The 75k gold isn't any better, it just looks different.
Yojinj
So you say "those who not farm should just buy the standard looking armor".
Well thank you but no. I too want the better looking one but i will be never able to buy it because i refuse to farm.
Again the casual player is the one who gets kicked in his butt.

Armor thats so expensive wouldn't be for casual players. I think it was designed as a gold sink for hardcore players to waste their gold on.
The storyline and PvP only characters are for the casual group.

Ehem not every casual player is mainly PvP. A great deal of players enjoys the PvE part of the game more then the PvP part.

Right, I should have mentioned that.

To which I would reply, "Oh, ok, that is what I thought he meant, however I just wanted to make sure that anyone who may misinterpret it would understand that just because someone is nice enough to sell below the "suggested" price, they are not selling them something that is not deldrimor steel."
So, in conclusion, before you call me a "[email protected]", "[email protected]" and say that my comprehension skills are sub-par or lacking, why don't you explain what you think I meant, and what is actually meant, and not try to start something.

Pyro come on, your first reply patronized me, so Santanus_Perro was nice enough to defend me (which I thought I did a good job in my reply, hehe). You shouldn't be defending yourself cause you started it. If you didn't want me or anyone else to say anything smart, then you shouldn't have said anything smart yourself, right? Right.
Now this should be the end of it, imagine giving everyone hugs, I know I am, haha. Discuss steel dammit, haha.

One thing not mentioned is the amount of "time" it takes to gather the resourses to make Deldrimore Steel. Lot of people go 1k "omg, what a rip off" and i reply...yeah well you come up with this...run out of that...gotta find more this..go there...make that...run out of that one...go buy somemore of that...then go to here and craft it, and then get to the armor dealer.

Part of why this thread caught my eye is because, when deciding which armor set I may want to buy for my necro I ended up buying the Bonelace set in GC ~ I'd possibly have waited to buy the Tormentor's once they add the new graphics, but chose not to simply due to the fact that, considering materials cost etc, that 60k armor set would actually be more like an 80k + armor set.
The thing I'm trying to understand though, is are you simply trying to come up with what a crafter's potential selling market would be should you choose to make the steel for resale ? And no, I'm not trying to present any arguements etc, but rather just trying to figure out what the specific point you're trying to make may be ...
As it goes, I spent a good amount of time trying to get more runes etc unlocked, and made a decent amount of gold sort of via the nature of that process ... but also in that process I easily salvaged 500+ of most crafting materials. You could argue that this takes a long time, but it really doesnt once you've been through explorable areas a couple of times ~ you tend to pick up on things like how if you want go gather leather, Whitman's is about 75% armor drops that salvage into leather, Perdition Rock is an easy source for bone etc.
So again, I suppose I'm just trying to understand what it is you're explaining with the original post. Also, out of curiousity, I was wondering if you'd at all tried selling the steel to one of the material traders to see what they offer as a buying price, and if the average falls somewhere in line with the prices you'd calculated, as I suppose if you *are* simply coming up with a base market value, you'd also be underselling yourself to sell per piece to a player for anything less than a trader would offer.

I bought a 10-pack of Deldrimor Steel at the material merchant yesterday for 600g.

Wrath of m0o
omfg...pwnt. Thats cheaper than you can make it and saves a lot of time. Good call.

The craftable only materials are strange. The last time I checked to see how much 10 Deldrimor Steel would sell for at the NPC, it said 30 gold.... I've never seen it for sale at the NPC, but I guess if you sold 10, then 10 would be available, i've never done this cause that would be a 7000 gold experiment that I'd feel stupid for.
Snepp says he bought it once, so some idiot must have sold 10 just to see what would happen and Snepp benefited from it.
Sadye X, I came up with the topic because I was sick of people saying Deldrimor Steel for 500+ is a scam and was also sick of people selling it for 1500+ when it cost far less.
However, in the past couple of days I've noticed charcoal has become more rare and more expensive, I can hardly trade for it because not many people have it and when they do, I have to trade it for 200-250 gold. With the new rare material trader, it'll be even harder to buy charcoal at those prices because the NPC gives it a base price of 350, that as last night and I haven't checked today so It may be higher.
Tonight I'll post all the new prices.
I'd like to see Wrath of m0o expand his idea more. Maybe we can come up with how much time costs. Obviously people making Deld Steel for resale should get a profit because it does take time, in my original post I priced that time at 100 gold, maybe it's more, maybe less, but we should discuss it. Its easy to go out and get all the materials for 10, but for all 35-40 it takes even longer, and harder, and to get it from a resaler all 35-40 at once saves the buyer so much time and that should cost him something. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe 300-400 gold is fair profit instead of 100-150.

Well for starters charcoal wich is 10 wood+200g to craft, so if you bought 10 wood for 10g each(going rate) charcoal costs 300g to craft. When ever i see someone selling charcoal for anything less than 300, I buy it.
Iron, dust and wood have been trading well at 10g each (cost you 15 each at merch) So if you can buy it less, than good for you. I was buying at 10g each because that impulsed people to sell it.
So if deld steel is 10 iron (100) + 5 dust (50) + charcoal (300) + (200g) crafting fee
you get deldrimore steel at 650 cost. Unless you have a guild that is pumping supplies into many alt characters inventory as a storage tank. It took me several hours to come up with the materials to make ingredients for deldrimore steel, Then when i ran out of materials, it took more time aquiring more to go craft it.
I have been selling it at 1k because that is what i paid for it my first time to the citadel. Having 60k when i got there i immediately bought 15k worth to check out this new armor. So my 1st peice of armor cost me 15k for deldrimore steel and 15k to craft. Being my 2nd character, i skipped out on the armor at droknars forge and went right to citadel.

Yea, good checking the prices. But now that there is a rare material NPC, charcoal is less than 10 wood + 200g.
Ok, new pricing and new logic that should make everyone happy. There'll be two sets of prices, one for the fastest way wihtout trading, and second will be the slowest way which is trading with people to get the cheapest price.
Fastest way (buying it all from merchants):
Charcoal 230-290g
Iron 18-24gx10 180-240g
Dust 15gx5 75
Craft 200g
Total 685-805g
Slowest way (trading with people):
Charcoal 100-180g
Iron 11-17gx10 110-170g
Dust 5-8gx5 25-40g
Craft 200g
Total 435-590g
Fastest way is the most expensive, but least time consuming. Slowest way is the least expensive, but MOST TIME consuming. Charcoal is rare and limited in use, and most people don't have it or want it and I suspect people have been selling it off to the rare merchant to make a quick buck which helps in the lower cost of charcoal from the NPC merchants.
No point in buying deldrimor steel over 685-805g when you can make it for the same price in the fastest way. No point in selling deldrimor steel for less than 435-590g when it cost you that much to trade it.
Depending on the day and prices that the NPC merchants are buying and selling at, deldrimor steel can be from 435-590g to 685-805g.
Recomanned buying/selling price, depends. Use the charts above, use your head, figure it out. I can make a quick excel document that can take the price of charcoal and iron to give you the price of deldrimor steel if anyone wants, but i'm lazy right now, this should be sufficent enough.
